A step-up transformer operates on a 230 V line and supplies a load of 2A. The ratio of the primary and secondary windings is 1 : 25. The current in the primary is:

    A)  15 A

    B)         50 A

    C)  75 A

    D)  125 A

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

Given: Input voltage in primary\[({{\varepsilon }_{p}})=230V;\] Current in secondary \[({{I}_{s}})=2A\] and ratio of primary to secondary windings\[{{N}_{p}}:{{N}_{s}}=1:25\]. We know that ratio of current in primary to secondary\[\frac{{{I}_{p}}}{{{I}_{s}}}=\frac{{{N}_{s}}}{{{N}_{p}}}=\frac{25}{1}.\] Therefore current in the primary\[{{I}_{p}}={{I}_{s}}\times \frac{25}{1}=2\times \frac{25}{1}=50A.\]
