JIPMER Jipmer Medical Solved Paper-2015

  • question_answer
In solvents like DMSO, acetonitrile, \[{{F}^{-}}\]ion of dissolved\[NaF\]is more reactive than in methyl alcohol. Explain.

    A)  \[C{{H}_{3}}OH\] is more polar than DMSO and \[C{{H}_{3}}CN\]

    B)    \[C{{H}_{3}}OH\] is less polar than DMSO and \[C{{H}_{3}}CN\]

    C)     unsolvated \[{{F}^{-}}\]ion is DMSO or \[C{{H}_{3}}CN\] acts more efficiently as nucleophile

    D)     \[-OH\]group is a better leaving group than \[{{F}^{-}}\]ion

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

In methyl alcohol, \[{{F}^{-}}\]ion is solvated but in DMSO or \[\text{C}{{\text{H}}_{\text{3}}}\text{CN}\](aprotic solvent) \[{{F}^{-}}\] ion is not solvated. Unsolvated \[{{F}^{-}}\] ion acts more efficiently as a nucleophile.
