MGIMS WARDHA MGIMS WARDHA Solved Paper-2004

A metal ion involved in stomatal regulation is :

    A)  iron

    B)  potassium

    C)  zinc

    D)  magnesium

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

Potassium ions are involved in the stomatal movement. Potassium ions and associated negative ions accumulate in guard cells during the day in response to light. Now solute potential become more negative, resulting in entry of water by osmosis and the guard cells turgid. The turgidity of guard cell opened the stomata. In darkness potassium ions \[({{K}^{+}})\] move out of the guard cells into surrounding epidermal cells. The water potential of the guard cells increases as a result and water moves out of the cells. The loss of pressure makes the guard cells change shape again and stomata  closes.
