    An example for autocatalysis is

    A)  oxidation of NO to\[N{{O}_{2}}\]

    B) oxidation of\[S{{O}_{2}}\]to\[S{{O}_{3}}\]

    C) decomposition of\[KCl{{O}_{3}}\]to\[KCl\]and\[{{O}_{2}}\]

    D) oxidation of oxalic acid by acidified\[KMn{{O}_{4}}\]

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

Autocatalysis is a process in which one of the product behaves as a catalyst. eg, \[2KMn{{O}_{4}}+5{{H}_{2}}{{C}_{2}}{{O}_{4}}+3{{H}_{2}}S{{O}_{4}}\xrightarrow{{}}\] \[\underset{(acts\text{ }as\text{ }catalyst)}{\mathop{{{K}_{2}}S{{O}_{4}}+2MnS{{O}_{4}}+8{{H}_{2}}O+10C{{O}_{2}}}}\,\] The pink colour of \[KMnS{{O}_{4}}\]disappears slowly on reaction with oxalic acid, but the rate of disappearance of colour fastens after some time due to the formation of\[MnS{{O}_{4}}\]which acts as auto catalyst for the reaction.
