MGIMS WARDHA MGIMS WARDHA Solved Paper-2015

  • question_answer
The standard reduction potentials of half reactions are given below \[{{F}_{2}}(g)+2{{e}^{-}}\xrightarrow[{}]{{}}2{{F}^{-}}(aq);E{}^\circ =+2.85V\] \[C{{l}_{2}}(g)+2{{e}^{-}}\xrightarrow[{}]{{}}2C{{l}^{-}}(aq);E{}^\circ =+1.36V\] \[B{{r}_{2}}(g)+2{{e}^{-}}\xrightarrow[{}]{{}}2B{{r}^{-}}(aq);E{}^\circ =+1.06V\] \[{{I}_{2}}(g)+2{{e}^{-}}\xrightarrow[{}]{{}}2{{I}^{-}}(aq);E{}^\circ =+0.53V\] The strongest oxidising and reducing agents respectively are

    A)  chlorine and iodine

    B)  fluorine and iodine ion

    C)  chloride and bromine

    D)  bromine and iodine

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

Higher the reduction potential, more easily it is reduced and so, better oxidising agent it is. Hence,\[{{F}_{2}}\]is strongest oxidising agent and\[{{I}^{-}}\]ion is the strongest reducing agent.
