Done-at least that is what Jim Corbett had said. A panther is more likely to enter a village or even a house than a tiger is. He will lie in wait beside a hut for an unsuspecting child to come out, [and] then seize him by the neck. There will be no sound; the child just disappears. A tiger will rarely trouble himself with a child, there is too little in it for him. It is a question of cost-benefit. The energy he will expend in capturing and killing a child provides him with very little food. He would rather kill a buffalo or other hoofed wild game, which provides him with much more food. A tiger weighs 180-230 kilos, while a panther may be around 50 kilos or so. Panthers sometimes take to child lifting even though normal food like dogs, goats and chicken are easily available.

तेंदुए बाघ से ज्यादा चालाक होते हैं। जिम कॉर्बेट ने कहा था कि सब कुछ कहने और करने के बाद भी बाघ सज्जन है। तेंदुआ की बाघ की अपेक्षा गाँव अथवा घरों में भी प्रवेश करने की संभावना ज्यादा है। वह झोपड़ी की बगल में लेटा हुआ इसका इंतजार करता है कि कब एक खतरे से अनजान बच्चा बाहर आये और तब वह उसको गर्दन से दबोच लें। कोई भी आवाज नहीं होगी और बच्चा यूँ ही गायब हो जायेगा। एक बाघ एक बच्चे के लिए अपने को कभी-कभार तकलीफ नहीं देगा, क्योंकि उसके लिए यह बहुत कम है। यह व्यय-लाभ का प्रश्न है। बाघ बच्चे को पकड़ने और मारगा में जितनी ऊर्जा व्यय करेगा उसकी अपेक्षा उसे बहुत कम भोजन उपलब्ध होगा। इसके बजाय वह एक भैंसे अथवा किसी खुरवाले जंगली शिकार को मारेग जिससे उसको काफी अधिक मात्रा में भोजन उपलब्ध होगा। एक बाघ का वजन 180-230 किग्रा. होता है, जबकि तेंदुआ लगभग 50 कि.ग्रा. के आसपास-अपने सामान्य भोजन जैसे कि कुत्ते, बकरियाँ और मुर्गे आराम से सुलभ होने पर भी, तेंदुए बच्चों को उठाने पर उतर आते हैं।
