The absolute enthalpy of neutralisation of the reaction: \[MgO(s)+2HCl\,(aq)\,MgC{{l}_{2}}(aq)\] \[+{{H}_{2}}O\,(l)\] will be:                                                                                             [AIPMT (S) 2005]

    A)        less than \[-\text{ }57.33\text{ }kJ\text{ }mo{{l}^{-1}}\]

    B)  \[-\text{ }57.33\text{ }kJ\text{ }mo{{l}^{-1}}\]

    C)  greater than \[-\text{ }57.33\text{ }kJ\text{ }mo{{l}^{-1}}\]

    D)  \[\text{ }57.33\text{ }kJ\text{ }mo{{l}^{-1}}\]

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

Heat of neutralization of strong acid and strong base is -57.33 kJ. MgO is weak base while HCl is strong acid, so the heat of neutralization of MgO and HCl is lower to -57.33 kJ because MgO requires some heat in ionisation, then net released amount of heat is decreased.
