NEET Physics Wave Mechanics NEET PYQ-Wave Mechanics

  • question_answer
The equation of a wave is given by:                      [AIPMT 2001] \[y=a\sin \left( 100t-\frac{x}{10} \right),\] where x and y are in metre and t in second; then velocity of wave is:

    A)  0.1 m/s

    B)                   10 m/s

    C)  100 m/s

    D)                   1000 m/s

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

Key Idea: The standard wave equation is
                            \[y=a\sin \,(\omega t-kx)\]
    The given wave equation is
                \[y=a\sin \,\left( 100t-\frac{x}{10} \right)\]
Compare it with the standard wave equation, we obtain
                \[\omega =100,\,k=\frac{1}{10}\]
    Velocity of the wave,
                \[v=\frac{\omega }{k}=\frac{100}{\frac{1}{10}}=100\times 10=1000\,m/s\]
