(i) Project tiger was launched in 1973 because the authorities realized that its population was dwindling. (ii) There are 27 tiger reserves in India, like Corbett national park, Sunderbans, Sariska and Manas tiger reserves etc. (iii) Threat to tiger population is from: Poaching for trade, shrinking habitat, depletion of prey base species and growing human population. (iv) India and Nepal provide habitat to 2/3 (two- third) of the tiger population.
