What is the equation of the line passing through the point (-1, 3) and having \[x-\]Intercept of 4 units?

    A) \[3x-5y=12\]

    B) \[~3x+5y=12\]

    C) \[~3x+5y=-12\]

    D) \[3x-5y=-12\]

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

     The required equation is: \[\frac{x}{a}+\frac{y}{b}=1\]   where \[a=4\]             The straight line passes through \[(-1,\,3).\]             \[\therefore \]      \[\frac{-1}{4}+\frac{3}{b}=1\]             \[\Rightarrow \]\[\frac{3}{b}=1+\frac{1}{4}=\frac{5}{4}\]             \[\Rightarrow \]\[b=\frac{4\times 3}{5}=\frac{12}{5}\]             \[\therefore \] \[\frac{x}{a}+\frac{y}{b}=1\]             \[\Rightarrow \]\[\frac{x}{4}+\frac{5y}{12}=1\]             \[\Rightarrow \]\[\frac{3x+5y}{12}=1\]             \[\Rightarrow \]\[3x+5y=12\]
