Which of the following compound reacts with chloroform and a base to form phenyl isocyanide?

    A)  Phenol

    B)                                         Aniline

    C)         Benzene

    D)         Nitro benzene

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

We know that \[\underset{\text{Aniline}}{\mathop{{{C}_{6}}{{H}_{5}}N{{H}_{2}}}}\,+\underset{\text{chloroform}}{\mathop{CHC{{l}_{3}}}}\,+3KOH\,\xrightarrow{{}}\] \[\underset{\text{phyenyl}\,\,\text{isocyanide}}{\mathop{{{C}_{6}}{{H}_{5}}NC+3KCl}}\,+3{{H}_{2}}O\] Thus in this reaction phenyl isocyanide is produced. This is called carbylamine reaction.
