  • question_answer
A wave in expressed by the equation y = 0.5 sin \[\pi \](0.01 x - 3t) where x, y are in metres and t in second. The speed of propagation will be:

    A) 150 m/s

    B) 300 m/s

    C)        350 m/s

    D)        250 m/s

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

    Given equation is \[y=0.5\text{ }sin\text{ }\pi \text{ (}0.01\text{ }x-3t\text{)}\] or   \[y=0.5\sin \,(0.01\pi x-3\pi t)\]                           ... (i) Standard equation of wave is \[y=A\sin \,(kx-\omega t)\]                                        ?(ii) Comparing equations (i) and (ii), we get \[k=0.01\,\pi \] and \[\omega =3\pi \] We know that \[k=\frac{\omega }{\upsilon }\]or \[\upsilon =\frac{\omega }{k}=\frac{3\pi }{0.01\pi }=300\,m/s\]
