Direction for: In each of the following questions a statement of Assertion is given followed by a corresponding statement of Reason just below it. Of the statements mark the correct answer as

Assertion: Crystalline solids can cause X-rays to diffract. Reason: Interatomic distance in crystalline solids is of the order of 0.1 nm.

    A) If both assertion and reason are true and reason is the correct explanation of assertion

    B) If both assertion and reason are true but reason is not the correct explanation of assertion

    C) If assertion is true but reason is false

    D) If both assertion and reason are false

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

In case of diffraction the slit width must be of the order of wavelength of incident ray. The spacing of the atoms in crystal is of the order of wavelength of X-rays mm) which is so in crystalline solids. Hence, X-rays arc diffracted from crystalline solids.
