Mosses occurs in moist place because

    A) they can not grow on land

    B) their gamete fuse in water

    C) they lack vascular tissue

    D) they lack root and stomata

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

The mosses are higher bryophytes. They occur on moist places because water is needed for the fertilization (ie, gametes fuse in water). The male gametes are flagellated (two). The mosses can grow on land but required water for the process of fertilization. The mosses lack vascular tissue (xylem and phloem). The stem is differentiated into three, zones ie, cortex, hadrome and medulla. The mosses lack true roots but contain rhizoids. The rhizoids are multicellular with oblique septa between the cells, whim is considered an adaptation to facilitate faster conduction. The stomata are present only on the epidermis of apophysis region of capsule.
