When ordinary light is made incident on a quarter wave plate, the emergent light is

    A) linearly polarized

    B) circularly polarized

    C) ellipticallypolarized

    D) unpolarised

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

A quarter wave plate is a plate of calcite or quartz. Its refracting faces are cut parallel to the direction of optic axis. The thickness of plate is such that it introduces a phase difference of \[\frac{\pi }{2}\] or path difference of \[\frac{\lambda }{4}\]between ordinary and extra ordinary wave. it does not convert ordinary light to polarized one. Note: A Nicol prism is used to convert ordinary unpolarized light to polarized one.
