  • question_answer
If \[\text{N}{{\text{a}}^{\text{+}}}\] ion is larger than \[\text{M}{{\text{g}}^{\text{2+}}}\] ion and \[{{\text{S}}^{2-}}\] ion is larger than \[\text{C}{{\text{l}}^{-}}\] ion, which of the following will be stable soluble in water?

    A) Sodium chloride

    B) Sodium sulphide

    C) Magnesium chloride

    D) Magnesium sulphide

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

Magnesium sulphide. Higher the lattice energy lower the solubility. Out of the four combinations possible, the lattice energy of MgS (bi-bivalent ionic solid) is higher than those of \[\text{N}{{\text{a}}_{\text{2}}}\text{S,MgC}{{\text{l}}_{\text{2}}}\] (uni-bivalent or biuni- valent ionic solids) and \[\text{NaCl}\] uni-univalent ionic solids) and hence, MgS is the least soluble.
