VMMC VMMC Medical Solved Paper-2010

  • question_answer
Phenol  and  benzoic  acid  may  be distinguished by

    A) \[NaHC{{O}_{3}}\]

    B) \[NaOH\]

    C)        Na

    D)        Both (b) and (c)

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

Benzoic acid reacts with \[\text{NaHC}{{\text{O}}_{\text{3}}}\] to give effervescence due to the evolution of \[\text{C}{{\text{O}}_{2}}.\] \[{{C}_{6}}{{H}_{5}}COOH+NaHC{{O}_{3}}\xrightarrow{{}}{{C}_{6}}{{H}_{5}}COONa\] \[+{{H}_{2}}O+C{{O}_{2}}\] Phenol does not give effervescence. Phenol and benzoic acid cannot be distinguished by \[\text{NaOH}\]  and Na because both can react with \[\text{NaOH}\] and Na.
