The liquid arms of an U-tube is shown in figure below. The shaded part represents the mercury (specific gravity 13.6) and other liquid is water. If the difference between height of mercury in either column is 2 cm, then height of water column is

    A) 27 cm

    B) 23 cm

    C) 25 cm

    D) 29 cm

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

Suppose, the atmospheric pressure is \[{{p}_{0}}.\] Pressure at \[A={{p}_{0}}+h(1000\text{kg}\,{{\text{m}}^{-3}})g\] Pressure at \[B={{p}_{0}}+h(0.02\,\text{m})(13600\text{kg}\,{{\text{m}}^{-3}})g\] These pressures, at A and B are equal because points are on the some horizontal level. Thus, \[h=0.02\times 13.6m\] = 0.27 m or 27 cm
