  • question_answer
A body floats in water with 40% of its volume outside water. When the same body floats in oil, 60% of its volume remains outside oil. The relative density of the oil is

    A)  0.9

    B)  1.2

    C)  1.5

    D)  1.8

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

A body floats with 40% of its volume outside water, hence fraction of the immersed part \[=f=\frac{d}{\rho }\] So, in water, \[f=1-0.4=0.6\] Hence, \[0.6=\frac{d}{1}\Rightarrow d=0.6\] In oil, the body floats with 60% of its volume outside water, hence fraction of the  immersed part \[=f=1-0.6=0.4.\] So, in oil, \[f=\frac{d}{{{\rho }_{oil}}}\] \[\Rightarrow \]               \[0.4=\frac{0.6}{{{\rho }_{oil}}}\Rightarrow {{\rho }_{oil}}=1.5\]
