  • question_answer
Living cells placed in isotonic solution (0.9% saline) retain their size and shape. This is based on the concept of

    A)  osmosis

    B)  diffusion

    C)  facilitated diffusion

    D)  transpiration

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

When living cells are placed in isotonic solution, they retain their shape and size as such because no osmotic movement of water molecules takes place. If a plant cell is placed in hypertonic solution, the cell gets plasmolysed due to exosmosis. On the other hand, if a plasmolysed cell is placed in hypotonic solution, endosmosis occurs and the cell gets deplasmolysed.
