The serous membrane which covers the lungs is called

    A)  pericardium

    B)  peritoneum

    C)  perichondrium

    D)  pleura

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

Lungs are the paired triangular bags constituting the respiratory organ. Each lung is enclosed in two membranes called pleura (layers of peritoneum of the thorax). There are two membrane that cover the lungs, i.e., visceral pleuron (which firmly bound to the surface of the lungs) and parietal pleuron (which is held to the thoracic wall and diaphragm by connective tissue). Pleura also secrete the pleural fluid for reducing the friction on the surface of the lungs.
