Which one of the following acts solely as an inhibitory neurotransmitter?

    A)  Norepinephrine

    B)  Gamma \[(\gamma )\] amino butyric acid

    C)  Acetylcholine

    D)  Dopamine

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

\[\gamma -\]aminobutyric acid is the chief inhibitory neurotransmitter in the mammalian central nervous system. It plays the principal role ,in reducing neuronal excitability throughout the nervous system. In humans it is also directly responsible for the regulation of muscle tone. Nor-epinephrine, also called nor-adrenaline is a neurotransmitter released by adrenergic nerve terminals in. the central nervous system. Its effects are constricting blood vessels, raising blood pressure and dilating bronchi. Acetylcholine is the neurotransmitter produced by neurons referred to as cholinergic neurons. It plays its role in skeletal muscle movement as well as in the regulation of smooth muscle and cardiac muscle. It is also believed to be involved in learning, memory and mood. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter that plays a  number of important roles in the human brain and body. In the blood vessels, it inhibits nor-epinephrine release and acts as a vasodilator, in kidneys it increases sodium excretion urine output, etc.
