  • question_answer
Three different species of plants were selected by scientists who wanted to document their methods of seed dispersal. The graphs below show the approximate number of seedlings found at various radii around the parent plant.

What are the correct methods of seed dispersal of each plant?

    A)
    Species 1 Species 2 Species 3
    Water Explosion Animal

    B)
    Species 1 Species 2 Species 3
    Wind Animal Water

    C)
    Species 1 Species 2 Species 3
    Wind Animal Explosion

    D)
    Species 1 Species 2 Species 3
    Explosion Water Animal

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

Seeds which are dispersed by wind are usually carried to far off places due to their small size and light weight, e.g., seeds of cotton and dandelion. Similarly, seeds dispersed by water are also light and can easily float and are carried too far off places by water, e.g., seeds of coconut. Seeds dispersed by animals (e.g. seeds of guava) can be carried by human beings and animals to nearer as well as long distances from the parent plant. Explosive action of some seeds e.g. balsam, pea, etc. scatters them away from the parent plant but it usually cannot enable the seeds to be dispersed to far off places.
