Direction: In each question below are given three statements followed by two conclusions numbered I and II. You have to take the given statements to be true even if they seem to be at variance with commonly known facts. Read all the conclusions and then decide which of the given conclusions logically follows from the given statements, disregarding commonly known facts.
Give answer Statements:     No grape is a banana, Some bananas are papayas. No papaya is a litchi. Conclusions:    I. All litchis can be grapes. II. Some litchis are not bananas.

    A)  if only conclusion I follows.

    B)  if only conclusion II follows.

    C)  if either conclusion I or II follows.

    D)  if neither conclusion I nor II follows.

    E)  if both conclusion I and II follow.

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

    No grape is a banana (E) + Some bananas are papayas (I) = E + I = O* = Some papayas are not grapes (O*), Now, No papaya is a litchi (E) \[\to \]conversion \[\to \]No litchi is a papaya (E) + Some papayas are not grapes (O*) = E + O* = No conclusion. But the possibility in I exists. Hence conclusion I follows. Again, Some bananas are papayas (I) + No papays is a litchi (E) = I + E = O = Some bananas are not litchis (O). Hence conclusion II does not follow.
