270 litres mixture of milk and water contains milk and water in the ratio of 3 : 2. How much milk is to be added to the mixture to get a new mixture of milk and water in the ratio of 5 : 2?

    A)  115 litres

    B)    110 litres

    C)                95 litres

    D)    108 litres

    E)    120 litres

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

    Initially, milk is \[\frac{270}{(3+2)}\times 3\] = 162 litres And water is \[\frac{270}{5}\times 2\]=108 litres Now, let the extra milk to be added be\[x\]litres. \[\therefore \] \[\frac{162+x}{108}=\frac{5}{2}\] or, \[324+2x=540\] or, \[2x=540-324\] or, \[2x=216\] \[\therefore \] \[x=108\]litres
