A spherical conductor of radius 2 m is charged to a potential of 120 V. It is now placed inside another hollow spherical conductor of radius 6 m. Calculate the potential to which the bigger sphere would be raised, if the smaller sphere is made to touch the bigger sphere.

    A)  20 V

    B)         60 V

    C)  80 V

    D)         40 V

    E)  120V

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

Whole of the charge of the smaller sphere will be transferred to the bigger sphere. Here,\[{{V}_{1}}=120=\frac{kQ}{2}\]and\[{{V}_{2}}=\frac{kQ}{6}=\frac{240}{6}=40\,V\]
