  • question_answer 18)
An organic compound with the molecular formula forms 2,4-DNP derivative, reduces Tollen's reagent and undergoesCannizzaro reaction. On vigorous oxidation, it gives 1,2-benzenedicarboxylic acid. Identify the compound. (i) Identify the functional group from the reactions given by it. (ii) Find position of the functional group, from 1, 2-benzene dicarboxylicacid. (iii) Write the structure of actual compound. (iv) Give all reactions.

    Answer:

    (i) The compound with molecular formula  forms a2,4-DNP derivative and reduces Tollen's reagent, so it is an aldehyde. (ii) It undergoes Cannizzaro reaction, so the aldehyde group shouldbe directly attached to the benzene ring. (iii) On vigorous oxidation, it gives 1,2-benzene dicarboxylic acid, so itshould be an ortho substituted benzaldehyde, For molecularformula , the possibility is only o-ethyl benzaldehyde. (iv) The equations for all the reactions are given below:
