 State Bank of India and National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) have joined hands to provide collateral-free credit through Joint Liability Groups (JLGs) in Telangana. The two signed an MoU, along with seven NGOs from Nizamabad, Medak and Warangal districts, for the promotion and credit linkage of 2,000 JLGs during the current year.

 The board of Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) has approved the proposal for the insurer to hold a 51% stake in IDBI Bank. The announcement was made by Subhash Chandra Garg, Secretary, Department of Economic Affairs.  The life insurer has around 7.5% stake in LIC at present and will acquire the remaining stake from the government. Using this route rather than LIC directly buying the government’s stake in IDBI Bank will ensure that the bank receives the capital.

 ISRO has successfully conducted ground test of its high thrust version of Vikas Engine at ISRO Propulsion Complex (IPRC) in Mahendragiri, Tirunelveli district of Tamil Nadu for duration of 195 seconds. The tests meet all its propulsion parameters and were found satisfactory and closely matched the predictions.
  • Vikas Engine
Vikas belongs to family of liquid fuelled rocket engines conceptualized and designed by ISRO’s Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre in the 1970s. The design was based on licensed version of Viking engine with chemical pressurisation system. It is the workhorse liquid rocket engine powering second stage of India’s Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV), second stage and four strap on stages of Geosynchronous Launch Vehicle (GSLV) and is part of first stage i.e. twin engine core liquid stage (L110) of GSLV Mk-III. The propellant loading for Vikas engine in PSLV, GSLV Mark I and II is 40 tons, while in GSLV Mark III it is 55 tons. The recently tested high thrust version of Vikas engine will improve payload capability of PSLV, GSLV and GSLV Mk-III launch vehicles.

 Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated 171 km long Bansagar canal project in Mirzapur district of Uttar Pradesh. He also laid foundation stone of Mirzapur Medical College, inaugurated 100 Pradhan Mantri Jan Aushadhi Kendras and bridge over Ganga River at Balughat, Chunar, which will facilitate connectivity between Mirzapur and Varanasi.
  • Bansagar canal project
Bansagar Dam project is a joint venture (JV) between Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar Governments. It is multipurpose river valley project built on Son River situated in Ganges Basin in Madhya Pradesh. The total network of canal from the dam is 171 kms long. The canal network will bring waters from Shahdol district in Madhya Pradesh for Adwa Barrage, Meza Dam and Jirgo reservoir. It will provide big boost to irrigation in the region, benefiting1 lakh 70 thousand farmers farmers of Mirzapur and Allahabad districts of Uttar Pradesh.

 The first of world’s cheapest drinking water project was launched in Darbhanga district, Bihar. This was launched by Sulabh International, an organisation that introduced the concept of ‘Sulabh Sauchalya’ in the country. It would be managed by Self Help group of Darbhanga Nagar Nigam. With the help of this project, the people will easily be able to get pure and clean water only in 50paisa/litre. The 'Sulabh Jal' project converts contaminated pond and river water into safe drinking water.

 Kannada poet and film song lyricist M.N. Vyasa Rao passed away in Bengaluru, Karnataka. He was 73. He was also a recipient of the Karnataka Rajya Sahitya Academy award for his short story collection titled Maleyalli Neneda Maragalu.

 The 2018 Wimbledon Championships is a Grand Slam tennis tournament which takes place at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in Wimbledon, London, United Kingdom. The main tournament began on 2 July 2018 and finished on 15 July 2018. The 2018 tournament was the 132nd edition of the Championships. Novak Djokovic won the men's singles Title for the fourth time. Angelique Kerber won the Ladies' Singles title. The tournament is organised by All England Lawn Tennis Club and International Tennis Federation (ITF).

 The 21st edition of the FIFA World Cup concluded in Luzhniki Stadium in the Russian capital of Moscow. 32 nations, divided into eight groups, battled it out for the coveted trophy in the quadrennial month-long event. France emerged as the champion team of the FIFA World Cup 2018. It has defeated Croatia in a thrilling final by 4-2. It was the second world cup win for France, it first won in 1998.

  • Golden Boot Award: England's Harry Kane won the World Cup Golden Boot. He was the top scorer with six goals.

  • Fairplay Award: Spain was awarded the Fairplay Award for being the most disciplined team in the tournament.

     Indian boxers ruled the ring at the 36th Golden Glove of Vojvodina youth tournament, ending with seven gold medals to claim the overall top spot in the event in Subotica, Serbia. Four men and three women clinched gold medals at the tournament, which featured 17 countries. India finished first with 17 medals, including six silver and four bronze. Russia fetched 11 medals (3 gold, 2 silver and 6 bronze), but ended up third behind Kazakhstan, who had a better gold medal count (5) in their overall haul of seven medals.
