 Google announced a 1-million USD grant to promote news literacy among Indians. According to Google, the grant will work towards building a strong network of senior reporters and journalists, who will counteract fake news in India. The funding support is part of Google’s broader, $10-million commitment to media literacy. Google’s initiative will focus on delivering news literacy, especially in non-metro cities. Under the programme, Internews will put together a team of 250 journalists, fact-checkers, academicians, and NGO workers, who will be trained by global and Indian experts in a curriculum adapted to local needs and available in seven Indian languages.

  The 9th edition of joint military training exercise between India-Bangladesh SAMPRITI-IX will be conducted at Umroi, Meghalaya. Exercise SAMPRITI is an important bilateral defence cooperation endeavour between India and Bangladesh which is hosted alternately by both countries. During the joint exercise, Command Post Exercise and Field Training Exercise is to be conducted according to the United Nations Charter. The troops of both the armies will also practice Counter-Terrorist operation.

  Indian women’s team captain Rani Rampal became the 1st-ever hockey player worldwide to win the prestigious ‘World Games Athlete of the Year’ award 2019. The prize is given for outstanding performance, along with social commitment and fair behaviour. The 25-year-old Rani has been part of the Indian women’s hockey team since she was 15 years old and has made 240 appearances for the national team thus far. She was the player of the tournament in the FIH Women’s Series Finals in Hiroshima, Japan.

 Indian Coast Guard (ICG) has commissioned a high-speed interceptor boat C-448 in Mangaluru, Karnataka. This interceptor boat built by L&T (Larsen & Toubro) shipyard will have a crew of 12 personnel commanded by Assistant Commandant Apoorva Sharma. The boat will be used for patrolling and rescue operations. The boat is equipped with an infrared system for night surveillance can perform high-speed interception, low-intensity maritime operations etc. It has an endurance of 500 nautical miles at 20 knots and can reach a maximum speed of 45 knots.

  President Ram Nath Kovind will inaugurate the 34th Surajkund International Crafts Fair on February 1, 2020, in Faridabad, Haryana. The Mela is organized by the Surajkund Mela Authority & Haryana Tourism in collaboration with Union Ministries of Tourism, Textiles, Culture and External Affairs. The fair will help to promote tourism. For the 34th Surajkund International Crafts Mela-2020, the partner country of the fair is Uzbekistan. The state of Himachal Pradesh has been chosen to be the Theme State. At least 20 countries & all the states of India will be participating in the Mela. The fair was upgraded to international level in 2013 and since 2015, around 20 countries are being invited.

  Indian cyclist Esow Alben has bagged a gold in the men’s Keirin individual event of the Six-Day Berlin Tournament. Czech Republic’s Tomas Babek, who won a silver in the 2017 World Championship, came in second while Maximilian Lev of Germany took home the bronze. Keirin event is a six-day track cycling race. Each cyclist competes on every day of the competition. Esow was honoured with the Young Athlete of the Year Award at the Sportstar Aces Awards 2020 in Mumbai earlier this month.

 World’s largest meditation centre was inaugurated at Kanha Shanti Vanam in Hyderabad, Telangana. This centre is built to mark the 75th anniversary of the formation of Shri Ram Chandra Mission (SRCM) and Heartfulness Institute. The meditation centre with a central hall and eight peripheral halls to accommodate 1,00,000 people will offer meditation training free.

 The World Sustainable Summit 2020 is an annual event organized by The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) at New Delhi. This year theme of the event is: ‘Towards 2030: Making the Decade Count’. The Summit includes Sustainable Action Dialogues, Regional dialogues, corporate conclaves, IFAT Delhi 2020 (Exhibition of Clean Technologies), Youth Volunteer Programmes. The event has become a premier international event focusing on developing actions.

  The Chief Minister of Maharashtra Uddhav Thackeray inaugurated 18.5 kilometre-long stretch of Nagpur Metro Aqua line of Maha Metro Rail Network. The newly inaugurated Nagpur Metro Aqua line passing over the Ambazari lake in the city will connect the east and west parts of the city. This Metro line will facilitate the commuters coming from Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation’s Hingana area and adjoining areas of the outskirts of the city. This Line will have six stations starting from Lokmanya Nagar to Sitabuldi Interchange Metro Station. Nagpur Metro is the Greenest Metro deriving 65 per cent of its power consumption from Solar Energy. Nagpur Metro network is now operational up to 24.5 kilometres.

  The Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) has signed a licensing agreement with Intercontinental Exchange (ICE) Futures Europe. Intercontinental Exchange (ICE) Futures Europe is an operator of global exchanges and clearinghouses. India is one of the largest consumers and importers of crude oil in the world, and Brent crude is highly co-related with the Indian crude oil market. This agreement will serve the needs and interests to the Indian energy commodities space and market participants to access Rupee-dominated Brent benchmark prices. It will also help Indian commodity markets by providing convenient and cost-effective onshore hedging products and enable the price discovery of Brent crude prices in the Indian time zone.
