 Malaysian veteran Lee Chong Wei has won the Malaysian Open Badminton singles title for a historic 12th time. In the men’s final in Kuala Lumpur, he defeated young Japanese shuttler Kento Momota in straight games. In the women’s singles final, top seed Tai Tzu Ying from Taiwan saw off China’s He Bingjiao. India’s campaign in the tournament had ended with the defeat of PV Sindhu and Kidambi Srikanth in their singles semi-finals.

 The Odisha government signed an MoU with the Regional Integrated Multi-Hazard Early Warning System (RIMES) for enhancing early warning system for effective management of all kinds of disaster in the state, including flood, drought, heat wave, lightning, and road accidents. The government also signed three more MoUs that would benefit the farmers and enhance their production. This agreement enables for development and pilot implementation of decision support systems for automating risk assessment, advisory generation and dissemination.

 Premier stock exchange Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) has entered into an agreement with the Bombay Metal Exchange (BME) for the growth and systematic development of commodity derivatives markets in the non-ferrous metals complex. Through this MoU, the BSE and the BME will coordinate and work jointly on initiatives to deepen the understanding of commodity market among stakeholders. The BME, with its domain knowledge and unique stakeholders ranging from importers, traders to corporates, will assist the BSE in designing new and innovative deliverable products in commodities.

 Chennai-based United India Insurance Company announced the appointment of K B Vijay Srinivas as its Director and General Manager. Prior to taking up the new role, he was serving National Insurance Company Ltd as its Chief Marketing Officer and General Manager. Srinivas, in his 37 years of service, has also contributed articles in journals of insurance, tax and other subjects. A recipient of many awards, Srinivas is also an associate member of Insurance Institute of India.

 Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador has been elected as Mexico's President with over 53% of the vote, according to the country's electoral commission. Obrador, who has won the presidency at the third attempt, promised to tackle violence and wipe out corruption. The 64-year-old former Mexico City mayor will formally take power on December 1. His main opponent was Ricardo Anaya.

 The government has set up a 13-member committee to upgrade the norms for computation of economic data at states and districts level in the backdrop of plans to revise the base year for National Accounts or GDP calculation. The Committee for Sub-National Accounts will be headed by Ravindra H Dholakia, a retired professor of IIM Ahmedabad. The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MOSPI) will change the base year to 2017-18 for the calculation of GDP and IIP numbers from the current 2011-12 with an aim to capture changes in the economy.

 The National Doctors’ Day is observed every year on 1 July across India to express gratitude and acknowledge the dedication and commitment of the doctors’ towards our society. The observance of the day honours legendary physician and West Bengal’s second Chief Minister, Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy whose birth and death anniversary coincides on the same day. Indian Medical Association (IMA’s) theme for 2018 National Doctors’ Day is ‘Zero tolerance to violence against doctors and clinical establishment’,
  • Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy
He was born on 1 July 1882 in Patna, Bihar and died on 1 July 1962 in Kolkata, West Bengal.  He was highly respected physician and a renowned freedom fighter. He was the second Chief Minister of West Bengal and remained in his post for 14 years from 1948 until his death in 1962. He is often considered the great architect of West Bengal. He had founded five cities of West Bengal Durgapur, Bidhannagar, Ashokenagar, Kalyani and Habra. He was also a member of the Brahmo Samaj. He was an alumnus of the Medical College Calcutta of the University of Calcutta. He was awarded Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award in 1961. The Union Government has instituted Dr BC Roy National Award in his memory. He was instrumental in formation of Indian Medical Association (IMA) in 1928 and also in establishment of Medical Council of India (MCI). The National Doctor’s Day was established by Central Government in 1991 to be recognized and celebrated every year on 1st of July i.e. on the birth and death anniversary of the most famous physician of India Dr. B C Roy.

 The Banks Board Bureau (BBB) has recommended 15 executive directors to be elevated as managing directors (MD) at various public sector banks (PSBs). It was headed by former Department of Personnel and Training Secretary B P Sharma. These recommendations were based on interactions held by BBB and are subject to various clearances. The Appointments Committee of Cabinet (ACC) headed by Prime Minister will take the final decision in this regard.
  • Banks Board Bureau (BBB)
BBB is advisory authority (autonomous and self-governing body) of Central Government comprising eminent professionals and officials to improve governance of PSBs. It was announced by Union Government in August 2015 as part of seven point Indradhanush Mission to revamp PSBs and based on recommendations of RBI-appointed Nayak Committee. It is based in Mumbai, Maharashtra. The first BBB was set up in February 2016 under chairmanship of former CAG Vinod Rai.
  • Mandate: Its broad agenda is to improve governance at state-owned lenders. Its mandate also involves advising government on top-level appointments in PSBs and assisting banks with capital-raising plans through innovative financial methods and instruments as well as strategies to deal with issues of stressed assets or bad loans.
  • Composition: BBB comprises of Chairman, three ex-officio members (from government) and three expert members, two of which are from private sector.

 The ninth and final meeting of Eminent Persons Group (EPG) on Nepal-India Relations concluded in Kathmandu, Nepal. The Representatives from Nepal and India deliberated upon various bilateral issues including 1950 Peace and Friendship treaty, trade, transit and border during the two-day meeting. The EPG is a joint mechanism consisting of experts and intellectuals from India and Nepal. It was set up in February 2016 to make suggestions for updating all existing bilateral treaties and agreements between both the countries.

 Asia's first arbitration centre specialised in intellectual property is slated to open in Tokyo in September 2018 to resolve the growing number of disputes in the region. The International Arbitration Centre in Tokyo (IACT) is set to have around a dozen arbitrators from around the world, who would try to resolve disputes within a period of one year.
