 A team comprising experts from the Indian Institute of Technology-Kharagpur and the University of Oxford has been selected for an award for exceptional research-led innovation to mitigate arsenic poisoning in the Ganga-Brahmaputra delta in the north and northeast India. The innovation awards instituted by the university’s vice-chancellor include one for prominent Oxford-based linguist Aditi Lahiri, who was selected for the “inspiring leadership” award for developing a flexible approach to speech recognition.

 An eight-year-old Indian-origin schoolboy Ishwar Sharma, who is the under-11 UK national yoga champion has been named the 'British Indian of the Year' in the young achiever category for his accomplishments in the field. Ishwar Sharma has won a string of titles in both individual and artistic yoga, most recently a gold medal representing Great Britain at the World Student Games 2018 in Winnipeg, Canada. He was also named British Indian of the Year in the Young Achiever category at the sixth annual awards ceremony held in Birmingham, recently.

 Michael Ondaatje’s bestselling novel 'The English Patient' was announced as the winner of the Golden Man Booker Prize at the Southbank Centre in London. The prize was instituted as part of celebrations to mark the Booker’s having completed 50 years. Ondaatje’s novel, set during World War II, about a horribly burned man who finds himself in an Italian villa with three other unlikely characters, was picked as the winner by a public poll from a shortlist of five books.

 Noted artist Anjolie Ela Menon had received the National Kalidas Samman in Delhi for visual arts from the Madhya Pradesh government. The award was conferred in recognition of her insightful and sensitive portrayal of the identity and spirit of women through her meaningful paintings in a variety of media. With her first solo exhibition being held in Delhi in 1958, Menon is counted among India’s most accomplished artists and is the recipient of numerous national and international awards including the Padma Shri. Artist A. Ramachandran was also conferred with the Kalidas Award.

 Former captains Rahul Dravid of India, Ricky Ponting of Australia and retired England Women wicketkeeper-batter Claire Taylor were inducted into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame 2018 during a glitteringceremony in Dublin, Ireland. Former Team India captain Rahul Dravid has become the fifth Indian cricketer after Anil Kumble, Sunil Gavaskar, Bishan Singh Bedi and Kapil Dev to be inducted into the ICC Hall of Fame. The 45-year-old scored 24,208 runs in 509 international matches in his nearly 16-year-long playing career. As many as 87 cricketers are a part of ICC Hall of Fame.

 J P Nadda, Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare presented the Pradhan Mantri Surakshit Matritva Abhiyan (PMSMA) 'IPledgefor9' Achievers and MMR Reduction Awards. The ‘IPledgefor9' Achievers Awards were given to individuals and teams of doctors from the private sector and States for their remarkable services, outstanding support of institutions and commitment in achieving the mission’s objectives of safe motherhood to every woman in India. According to Mr Nadda, India has shown 22% reduction in Maternal Mortality Ratio (MMR) since 2013. Uttar Pradesh has shown 30% decline and has topped the chart in the reduction of maternal deaths.

 Gopalkrishna Gandhi has been chosen for the 24th Rajiv Gandhi National Sadbhavana Award for his contribution in promoting communal harmony, peace and goodwill. Gopalkrishna Gandhi is a former governor of West Bengal.  He will be presented with this award at an event on 20th August 2018 at Jawahar Bhawan in Delhi. The award contains a citation and a cash prize of Rs 10 lakh. The award is presented on the birthday anniversary of former Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.

 Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh has approved the institution of "Home Minister's Special Operation Medal" for the police personnel of States and Union Territories, Central Police Organisations (CPOs), Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) and Security Organisations involved in Special Operations. 
Mr Singh has also instituted three more Medals,   
  •  The Antarik Suraksha Medal, 
  •  Asadharan Aashuchan Padak, and 
  •  Utkrisht and Ati-Utkrisht Seva Medal 
  • The HM’s Special Operation Medal and Asadharan Aashuchan Padak will be awarded on August 15 and the Antarik Suraksha Medal and Utkrisht and Ati-Utkrisht Seva Medal will be announced on January 26 every year.

     The Ministry of Shipping’s flagship programme for port-led-prosperity ‘Sagarmala’ received the ‘Gold Award’ in infrastructure sector in the recently concluded 52nd Skoch Summit 2018 in New Delhi. The Sagarmala Programme also received the ‘Order of Merit’ at the Summit. The Skoch Awards recognize leadership and excellence in accelerating socio-economic changes. These awards have become a benchmark of best practices in India in the fields of governance, infrastructure, finance, banking, technology, corporate citizenship, economics and inclusive growth.

     Lawrence Haddad, who is a British economist and food policy researcher, and Dr David Nabarro, who has worked with the World Health Organization and United Nations on health and hunger issues, were named the 2018 World Food Prize recipients in a ceremony at the U.S. Department of Agriculture in Washington.  The World Food Prize was awarded this year to two men who have dedicated their careers to improving the availability of nutritious food for pregnant women and children in an effort to reduce the effects of malnutrition in developing countries.
