  India’s first ‘Quality Ratna’ award to Suresh Krishna, Chairman, Sundram Fasteners Ltd. He has been a role model for society in embracing the principles of quality in both personal and professional life. He pioneered the constitution of the TPM Club of India in collaboration with the Japan Institute of Plant Maintenance in 1998 and was its first Chairman. This award was awarded by trade body Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) Institute of Quality, in its 27th Quality Summit held in Bengaluru.

  Odia women weightlifter Jhilli Dalabehera, who has brought laurels for both the State and the country in several national and international events, will receive the 27th Ekalabya Award for 2019. The annual award instituted by Indian Metals Public Charitable Trust (IMPaCT) comprises a cash prize of Rs 5 lakh along with a citation. She has won two gold, three silver and a bronze medal in different International weightlifting events held between April 1, 2017, and March 31, 2019.

  Floating school project of Bangladesh wins Aga Khan Architecture Award. Bangladesh is a land of water. A large part of its landscape remains submerged underwater during the monsoon months. When Razia Alam came back from England after retirement as a teacher, she wanted to build a school for children which is spacious, modern and healthy for learning.
Razia also wanted it to be built at the land which was underwater for about six months of the year during the monsoon period. She contacted the internationally renowned architect of Bangladesh Saif Ul Haque to design the school. He took up the project and came with a school which has won many prestigious awards including the Aga Khan award. It is a floating school named ‘The Arcadia Education Project’. ‘The Arcadia Education Project’ in South Kanarchor of Bangladesh is an innovative concept. It is an amphibious school built with local material and expertise near the capital city Dhaka. The floating school is unique in its design and novel in its concept. The school also serves as a shelter, a daycare centre and a vocational training centre for the local people.

  Eliud Kipchoge, the first man to run a marathon in less than two hours, and 400 metres hurdles world champion Dalilah Muhammad won the World Athlete of the Year awards. Kipchoge, claimed governing body World Athletics’ year-ending prize in Monaco after making history last month when he ran the marathon distance of 42.195 kilometres (26.219 miles) in 1hr 59min 40.2sec. American Muhammad won her award after a magnificent year that saw her set a world record of 52.20 seconds at the US Trials in Iowa in July breaking a record that had stood since 2003.

  Swedish teen activist Greta Thunberg was awarded an international children’s peace prize, for her work in the struggle against climate change which has resonated with schoolchildren across the world. Cameroonian peace activist Divina Maloum, aged 15, also received the International Children’s Peace Prize, for her fighting spirit and ‘Peaceful struggle’ against Boko Haram jihadist group. The prizes were distributed by Laureate Kailash Satyarthi, an Indian children’s rights activist and 2014 Nobel Peace Prize winner. The award ceremony was organized by the Dutch Kids Right Organization.

 The Union Minister of the Ministry of Chemical and Fertilizers, conferred the Swachh Survekshan Grameen 2019 awards to top-ranked states, union territories, and districts in the various categories on the occasion of World Toilet Day at Pravasi Bhartiya Kendra, New Delhi. The top-ranked state: Tamil Nadu, and the top-ranked district: Peddapalli (Telangana), along with the state with the maximum citizen participation: Uttar Pradesh.

  India captain Virat Kohli was named People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India’s ‘Person of the Year for 2019’ for his animal advocacy efforts. Kohli’s efforts to improve conditions for animals include sending a letter on PETA India’s behalf to officials calling for the release of Malti, an elephant used for rides at Amer Fort, who was reportedly violently beaten by eight men. The PETA awards are given to people or organisations that take initiative in the welfare of animals and violence against animals.

His name was selected for the prize by an international jury chaired by former president Pranab Mukherjee, the Indira Gandhi Memorial Trust. This prestigious award, named after former prime minister (PM) Indira Gandhi, has been accorded annually by Indira Gandhi Trust since 1986. It is awarded to individuals or organizations in recognition of their creative efforts towards promoting international peace, development. The award consists of a monetary award of 25 lakhs and a citation. The 2017 Prize had gone to former Prime Minister of India, Manmohan Singh.
