We get the Times of India and The Economic Times every day. Dad puts the Economic Times into his briefcase to read during the long drive to his office. He reads The Times. My brother Paresh waits till dad goes for his bath. He reads the Sports pages. He is very interested in sports. Anita, my older sister, takes the Bombay Times with her to College. After lunch, Mother sits reading the newspaper. She finds it relaxing. Usually over the weekend I take an old paper, cut it into squares and fold it to make animals, fish, birds etc. It is a good pastime.

Points: Dress - duties - public servant - life of hardships and dangers - co-operation of the people. The Policeman is to be seen at street corners or at the police station. He wears a khaki shirt, khaki pants and a broad leather belt with a brass plate in the centre of it. He wears a black cap and heavy boots. He carries a baton and a whistle. He is a guardian of law and order. He directs traffic and makes the roads safe for us. If there is a fight, he separates those who fight. He arrests those who disturb the public peace. If there is an accident, he takes down statements from eye- witnesses. He has to give evidence in a court of law. He helps to catch thieves. The policeman faithfully serves the public. We would not feel safe or protected without him. His life is full of danger and hardships. If there is rioting and stone-throwing, he runs the risk of getting hurt. Recently there was a case of a policeman who was killed by the people when doing his duty. When a crowd gets -violent, he has to cane-charge them or burst tear-gas shells to disperse the people. People often try to oppose him when doing his duty. Sometimes he has to raid a gambling den, or a place where illicit liquor is made. Then lawless people might attack or kill a policeman. One of his chief hardships is that he gets a very low pay. So he feels like taking bribes to add to his income. The policeman does an important job. So we should give him all the help to do his duty well. We should respect him when he tries to maintain law and order. The government too should understand his difficulties. It should give him a decent pay and better living conditions. It is very necessary to keep the house safe. A safety door or a security camera at the front door is needed. Grills to be fitted on the windows and balcony. All the electrical points to be out of reach of children. Match boxes, gas lighters, medicines, cleaning liquids to be kept out of reach of little hands. Crockery and other breakable articles in the kitchen to be kept on higher shelves. Children must be taught to put away toys after playing. Anyone (especially elders) can trip and fall and get badly hurt. A little care and we can have a safe time at home.

He has a khaki canvas bag slung over his shoulder. In this bag he carries letters, post cards, money orders and parcels. His work begins early in the morning. He goes to the Post Office to collect the mail. He then starts on his round to distribute the letters. He visits each house and shop and delivers letters or parcels. He also pays out money orders to those who have received them. He collects the letters from different letter-boxes along the way. He takes them to the post office. He goes home for lunch. He returns to work. He delivers the mail a second time in the evening. He goes home to rest after finishing his day's work. The postman does a hard job. His work is dull. He does the same work every day. He has to be on his feet all the time. He has to walk many miles a day. He also has to go up and down the stairs of many buildings. At the end of the day he is very tired. He is a useful public servant. People eagerly wait for him. He is a cheerful worker. He is the bringer of good and bad news. If we had no postman we would have to go to the post office ourselves to collect our letters. We are a family of book lovers. A room in our flat is the library. The top shelves hold papa's books. Mama's books are many and are on three shelves. My brother Preet and I have our books. We have children's Encyclopedia, a Child Craft series and lots of story books and some comics. When we were small, mama used to read to us at bedtime. I love the books and keep the shelves neat and dust free. When I want to know more about something, I come and find out about it in the encyclopedia. I am proud of the home library.

Points: India has many beggars - some beg because they are helpless - some are professional beggars who do not like to work - appearance and habits - strict steps to be taken against beggary. India has many beggars. It is a poor country and there is a lot unemployment. So people who have no jobs and no food go to beg. Beggars are generally seen sitting on the roadside or on the way leading to a temple. Some beggars are really physically handicapped. They are blind, dumb or lame. Being helpless, they deserve our sympathy. But there are others who are professional beggars. They beg because they are lazy. They do not like to work. They find begging an easy way of earning money. So begging is their profession. Such people should not be helped by society. A beggar always looks dirty and unwashed. He wears torn clothes. He has no home. He eats whatever he gets and sleeps in the open air. Beggars are a burden to society. The government should take strict steps against begging. It should open beggars' homes where beggar should be given employment and made to work. Difficult Words: Unemployment-not having a job or work; physically handicapped-unable to use their eyes, ears, legs, etc. lame-unable to walk; sympathy-pity; professional beggar- one whose job is begging.

My bedroom overlooks the garden. In the room is my bed, a cupboard, a narrow table and a chair. Besides these, there are shelves along two walls, where my books, computer and toys are neatly placed. Lacy curtains are on the windows and there is a bright patterned bedcover on the bed. My teddy bear shares my pillow. From the open window moonlight streams into the bedroom. Sometimes when I wake early I hear birds call. I look out for them on the tree outside. My friends love to come and play with me in my own room.

Points: His appearance and nature - his duties - how he spends his day - home and rest. Madan is our school peon. He is tall, dark and quite good-looking. He has a very fine voice. He is honest and hard-working. Once Madan found a purse full of money. It belonged to one of the teachers. Madan handed over the purse to our Principal. Our Principal was so happy with him that he praised Madan openly at our school assembly. All of us clapped for him. Madan is never seen sitting idle. He is always doing something. He is humble, obedient and respectful to his superiors. He does his work willingly,                        Smartly dressed in his khaki uniform, Madan comes to school an hour before school begins. He opens the school, He manages the class rooms, office rooms an cleaned as well the benches desks and chair tables. Then he sits on a stool outside the Principal's office. He rings the bell when it is time for our classes to begin. He carries about notices from one class to another. He also runs errands for the Principal. When school is over he has to lock up the place. He hands over the keys and returns home. He has a wash and enjoys a hot cup of tea. He laughs and chats with his wife and children. He has his supper and enjoys his night's rest. We all like Madan because he gives his service with a smile. Difficult Words: Sitting idly - sitting and wasting time. Run errands - goes about doing outdoor work.

It was a long weekend break and my friends had gone outstation. I was restless and cranky. Mom said “Tina, why don't you help me in the kitchen? I have a lot of baking to do". "Wow!" I said, "that sounds like fan". I beat the eggs, weighed and sieved the flour, mixed it all with sugar. Then added essence and soon the cake was in the oven. We also made cookies. It was fun making them of different shapes. I helped cleaning the kitchen and waited patiently for the baking to be done as the aroma made my mouth water.

He is my neighbour. We have been friends since childhood. We joined school together. Even today we are classmates. Mukesh is tall and slim. He is strong and healthy. He has bright eyes and a charming face. He has a kind, sociable and helpful nature. He is good at his studies. He is also good at sports, elocution, debating and dramatics. He is an all-rounder. He is very popular with all the children in the school. I admire him for his good qualities. He is not selfish. He helps me as much as he can in my studies. He shares all that he has with me. We are really like brothers. We are very fond of each other. We like to be together all the time.
