  The National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) has suspended weightlifter Ramshad AR for a period of 2 years after being found guilty of violating the anti-doping rule. He was examined by the Doping Control Officer of NADA during the 71st Men’s National Weightlifting Championship. In addition to this, NADA has also banned Indian wrestler Ravinder Kumar for 4 years for failing a dope test.

  Novak Djokovic from Serbia inched closer to Spain’s Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer from Switzerland on the list of male tennis players with most Grand Slam titles after capturing a record-extending 8th title at Australian Open. Novak Djokovic has become only the 3rd man to win at least 8 titles. Novak Djokovic beat Austrian Dominic Thiem in five sets to successfully defend his Australian Open men’s singles title in Melbourne, Australia. Novak has also become 1st tennis player in the Open Era of men’s singles tennis to win a Grand Slam in 3 different decades. Ken Rosewall from Australia won Grand Slam titles in 3 different decades between the 1950s and 1970s but not all of them came in the Open Era. Novak Djokovic is now only 2 behind Rafael Nadal (19) and 3 behind Roger Federer (20) on the elite list which is being dominated by the Big Three since the start of the new millennium.
The Grand Slam are the four most important annual tennis tournaments.

  ‘Rubigula’, Flame-Throated Bulbul, has been unveiled as the official mascot for the Goa 2020 National Games in Panaji, Goa. The Flame-Throated Bulbul is the state bird of Goa. Goa will be hosting the 36th edition of the National Games from 20th October to 4th November 2020.

  Indian women’s team captain Rani Rampal became the 1st-ever hockey player worldwide to win the prestigious ‘World Games Athlete of the Year’ award 2019. The prize is given for outstanding performance, along with social commitment and fair behaviour. The 25-year-old Rani has been part of the Indian women’s hockey team since she was 15 years old and has made 240 appearances for the national team thus far. She was the player of the tournament in the FIH Women’s Series Finals in Hiroshima, Japan.

  Indian cyclist Esow Alben has bagged a gold in the men’s Keirin individual event of the Six-Day Berlin Tournament. Czech Republic’s Tomas Babek, who won a silver in the 2017 World Championship, came in second while Maximilian Lev of Germany took home the bronze. Keirin event is a six-day track cycling race. Each cyclist competes on every day of the competition. Esow was honoured with the Young Athlete of the Year Award at the Sportstar Aces Awards 2020 in Mumbai earlier this month.

 Indian shooters Apurvi Chandela and Divyansh Singh Panwar have won the gold medal in Meyton Cup held in Austria. Apurvi Chandela clinched the gold medal while Anjum Moudgil won the bronze medal in 10m air rifle women’s category. Divyansh Singh Panwar clinched the gold medal while Deepak Kumar won the bronze medal in the men’s 10m air rifle event.

  Paralympian Deepa Malik and wrestler Yogeshwar Dutt are among the new inductees in the government’s All India Council of Sports (AICS). It is an advisory body to the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports which was formed in 2015 by the Sports Minister Sarbananda Sonowal. Some other renowned new entrants in the Council are former shooter Anjali Bhagwat, footballer Renedy Singh, and mountaineer Bachendri Pal. Senior India off-spinner Harbhajan Singh has also been inducted in the council. The Council is an advisory body for implementation of policies, matters relating to the promotion of inclusiveness in sports with special focus on women, differently-abled, tribals etc.

 The team of the Indian Consulate has won the Diplomat Cup Cricket Championship of 2020 held in Sharjah. The team of the Indian Consulate defeated the Pakistan Consulate to win the trophy which was organized by Skyline University College in Sharjah. The trophy was organised with an aim of uniting the officials and employees of different Consulates based in UAE. The Consulate team of 8 countries participated in the tournament. The participating Consulates were: India, Australia, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh , Afghanistan, South Africa, Pakistan and the US.

  Vinesh Phogat won her first gold medal of the 2020 season at the Rome Ranking Series in Rome. She defeated Ecuador’s Luisa Elizabeth Melendres 4-0 in the final (53 kg) category. A teen sensation Anshu Malik settled for a silver in 57kg competition. She lost to Nigeria’s Odunayo Adekuoroye for the score 10-0.

  Thailand’s Ratchanok Intanon wins Indonesia Badminton Masters 2020 women’s singles title in Jakarta, Indonesia. She defeats Carolina Marin (Spain) 21-19, 11-21, 21-18 in the final clash. The win was her second title in the Indonesian tournament.
