  The International Cricket Council has penalized three Bangladesh as well as two Indian U-19 cricketers. The players have been sanctioned by ICC for violating the Code of Conduct for players. ICC found them guilty of the Level 3 breach during the U-19 World Cup finals between India and Bangladesh, held in South Africa. ICC found them guilty as they were involved in an exchange of words with some pushing and shoving on the field after the final match.
  • Who got penalized?
The list of punished players includes Towhid Hridoy, Shamim Hossain and Rakibul Hasan of Bangladesh, and Akash Singh and Ravi Bishnoi of India. The Bangladesh cricketers were handed six demerit points as per the ICC code of conduct. While Indian players were penalized with five demerit points for the post-match incidents. Ravi Bishnoi was further handed over two additional demerit points for using ‘language, actions or gestures which disparage or which could provoke an aggressive reaction’ from the batsman. The suspension points imposed by the International Cricket Council will be applied to the upcoming international matches that the players are most likely to participate and the demerit points will remain on records for two years. Bangladesh chased down a revised target of 170 to defeat India in the U-19 World Cup finals and claimed their maiden global trophy with a three-wicket victory in Potchefstroom, South Africa.

 The International Hockey Federation has named Indian striker Lalremsiami as 2019 FIH Women’s Rising Star of Year. Indian forward player Lalremsiami was awarded after beating Argentina’s Julieta Jankunas and Frederique Matla of the Netherlands in the contest in which she recieved 40 per cent of all the votes cast. Lalremsiami’s game was recognized first time in the wider hockey consciousness during the Hockey Women’s World Cup held in 2018 where she was one of the stand-out players of the tournament. She made her debut in 2017 in a test series against Belarus. She has been the top goalscorer twice in her career, first in a test series against Korea in 2017 and then against the Spain in 2019. She belongs to Mizoram.

  The Government of India has decided to consider all medical devices including implants and contraceptives as “Drugs”. The notification regarding the re-categorization was issued by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. With the implementation, all the medical devices will come under the purview of the Central Drugs and Standard Control Organization (CDSCO). The re-categorization will be implemented from 1st April 2020 in the phase manner. The re-categorization will enable the drugs regulator “CDSCO” to tighten the regulation to improve the safety and quality. The medical devices that will be re-categorized as per the notification issued by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, includes the devices that are used for life support, diagnosis, treatment or alleviation of any disease or disability. It also includes the devices that are used to disinfect other medical devices. This notification will effectively cover all medical devices that are sold in the market. Ministry of Health and Family Welfare will also release another notification stating a transition period for various categories of medical devices.
Present rules for the classification of medical devices in India:
In India, the medical devices are classified under four categories:
  • Class A
  • Class B
  • Class C
  • Class D
Examples of medical devices as per their category:
  • Class A and B medical devices are low-risk ones like surgical dressing, alcohol swabs, thermometers, blood pressure monitoring devices.
  • Class C and D are high-risk devices like implants, hemodialysis catheters, angiographic guide wire and heart valve.
According to the present medical rules, CDSCO issues licenses to the private notified bodies for the inspection of low risk-devices. But, in case of high risk devices, CDSCO is responsible for the issuing of licenses as well as for the inspection of the high risk devices.

  In Delhi Assembly Election, Arvind Kejriwal’s Aam Aadmi Party scored a landslide victory. This is the second time in a row as Aam Aadmi Party swept aside both BJP, which was again restricted to a single digit and Congress which could not win a single seat. In the 2015 Assembly Election, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) had won 67 seats out of 70. BJP has won eight seats, five more than the 2015 assembly election. However, the party managed to increase its vote share by over 6% from the last elections. 0.5% (approx) voters pressed the NOTA (None of the Above) button. Aam Aadmi Party’s Sanjeev Jha records the biggest victory margin of over 88,000 votes from Burari Assembly/Vidhan Sabha seat. Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal won the elections from New Delhi while Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia from Patparganj Assembly/Vidhan Sabha seat. Mr. Kejriwal thank the people of Delhi for reposing their faith in Aam Aadmi Party for the third time. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said that “This is the victory of the people who consider me as their son and voted for us”. He said, “This is the beginning of a new kind of politics”.

  •   The World Health Organization (WHO) has officially named the disease caused by the new coronavirus as “Covid-2019“. The new name “Covid-2019” has been taken from the words “corona”, “virus” and “disease”, with 2019 representing the year in which it emerged. The word coronavirus refers to the group of viruses it belongs to. The naming of the disease was done as the researchers were calling for an official name of the disease to avoid confusion and stigmatisation of any group or country. The virus was also designated as SARS-CoV-2 by the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses.

      National Security Guard (NSG) has organised the 20th International Seminar on “Comprehends the Evolving Contours of Terrorism & IED Threat-Wayahead for the Security Community” at Manesar, Haryana. The seminar was inaugurated by the Minister of State for Home Affairs, G. Kishan Reddy. Senior Police and security officers, and delegates from various countries are participating in the Seminar. A wide spectrum of Counter Terrorism and Counter-IED issues in wil be covered in the two-day seminar. During the seminar, the MoS for Home Affairs appealed to the Global community to join hands to form a united front against the common enemy i.e. terrorism. He also emphasized the importance of improving the Improvised Explosive Device (IED) detection and to enhance our capabilities to prevent such attacks. He also presented the Counter-IED Innovators awards and released the 30th volume of “The Bomshell”.

      The US removed India from its list of developing countries that are exempt from investigations into whether they harm American industry with unfairly subsidised exports. The United States Trade Representative (USTR) eliminated a host of countries including Brazil, Indonesia, Hong Kong, South Africa and Argentina. The US removed India from the list on account of it being a G-20 member and having a share of 0.5% or more of world trade. The move has cast a shadow on India being able to restore preferential benefits under the Generalised System of Preference (GSP) as part of its trade talks with the US, as only developing countries are eligible for it. India’s share in global exports was 1.67% in 2018. In global imports, it was 2.57%.

      Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has started developing a 200-km strike range tactical ballistic missile ‘Pranash’. The missile is an advanced version of the 150-km strike range Prahar missile which was being developed for tactical missions. The surface-to-surface ballistic missile will be of use for the Air Force and Army. It is a solid-propellant surface to a surface missile which can travel at the speed of Mach 2.

      The state government of Haryana has launched an initiative called ‘Reading Mission- Haryana’. The initiative was launched to encourage reading habit among the young students of the state. The scheme is on the lines of the ‘Reading Mission 2022’, launched by the central government. Under the state’s initiative, monthly book review sessions and mass book reading are to be organised by students in educational institutions.

     The Uttar Pradesh government has given its approval to the Ground Water Act-2020. The Ground Water Act-2020 has been approved with an objective of improving the falling groundwater level in the state. In order to achieve this aim, the state cabinet chaired by the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath approved the Ground Water Act-2020.
    After the implementation of the Ground Water Act-2020:
    • An online registration facility will be available for the registration process.
    • It will become mandatory to register before the installation of the submersible pumps.
    • No fees will be taken from the domestic users as well as the farmers.
    • Rainwater harvesting system will become mandatory in all private and government schools and colleges.
    • Registration will become mandatory for boring companies along with the information update in every three months.
    Punishments for the the violators:
    • If a person is caught for the first time while polluting the groundwater level, then there will be a provision of punishment from 6 months up to 1 year along with the penalty of Rs 2 lakhs to Rs 5 lakhs.
    • If a person is caught for the second time then there will be a penalty of Rs 5 lakhs to Rs 10 lakhs along with a punishment ranging from 2 years to 5 years.
    • If a person is caught for the third time then the person will face punishment from 5 years to 7 years along with penalty ranging from Rs 10 lakhs to Rs 20 lakhs.
