 Foreign Direct Investment to India decreased to 40 billion dollars last year from 44 billion dollars in 2016 while outflows from India, the main source of investment in South Asia, more than doubled, according to a new tradereport by the UN. According to the World Investment Report, 2018 by the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD)global foreign direct investment flows fell by 23 percent in 2017, to USD 1.43 trillion from USD 1.87 trillion in 2016.

 India has registered a significant decline in Maternal Mortality Ratio (MMR) recording a 22-percent reduction in such deaths since 2013. According to the Sample Registration System bulletin, the MMR has declined from 167 in 2011-2013 to 130 in 2014-2016. According to Health Ministry, every day 30 more pregnant women are now being saved in India as compared to 2013.

 Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (IIT-B), Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore, and Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi (IIT-D) are in the top 200 in QS World University Rankings 2019. The number of Indian universities in the top 1,000 increased from 20 to 24. IIT-Bombay is now the top institute in the country rising 17 positions from 2018 to 162, displacing IIT-Delhi which has remained at 172. The Indian Institute of Science too has overtaken IIT-Delhi and is now ranked 170. The 15th edition of the QS World University Rankings, released by global higher education analysts QS Quacquarelli Symonds and considered one of the most authoritative and prestigious rankings in the world sees six of India’s eight top-ranked IITs/IISCs improving their rank, with two remaining stable year-on-year.

 Prime Minister Narendra Modi has addressed the global celebrations of World Environment Day 2018 on 05th June in New Delhi. Prime Minister also visited the exhibition set up on the occasion, themed 'Beat Plastic Pollution'. India was the global host nation for the 43rd edition of this event. Environment Ministers, representatives from United Nations and members from various industry bodies were among the various dignitaries who attended the event.

 The steadily expanding global economy should remain resilient, at least for a couple of years, the World Bank has stated. The anti-poverty agency predicts global growth will decelerate slightly from a solid 3.1 percent this year to 3 percent next year and 2.9 percent in 2020.  The World Bank predicts that US growth will register 2.7 percent in 2018, aided by tax cuts, before slowing to 2.5 percent next year and 2 percent in 2020. China's growth is projected at 6.5 percent this year, 6.3 percent in 2019 and 6.2 percent in 2020.

 Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) of Reserve Bank of India has increased the policy Repo Rate under the liquidity adjustment facility (LAF) by 25 basis points to 6.25 percent in the Second Bi-monthly Monetary Policy Statement (2018-19). Consequently, the reverse repo rate under the LAF stands adjusted to 6.0 percent, and the marginal standing facility (MSF) rate and the Bank Rate to 6.50 percent. MPC revised CPI inflation for 2018-19 to 4.8-4.9% in the first half and 4.7% in the second half. The MPC stated that the GDP growth rate for 2018-19 is retained at 7.4 percent.

 India cricket captain Virat Kohli is among the world’s highest-paid athletes, according to a Forbes’ compilation topped by American boxing champion Floyd Mayweather. Kohli, the only sportsperson from India to be featured in the list, is ranked 83rd with earnings of USD 24 million. Kohli is not just cricket-crazy India’s biggest name but is also one of the most popular athletes in the world. The  ‘World’s Highest-Paid Athletes 2018’ list is topped by 41-year-old Mayweather, with USD 285 million earnings.

 Maharashtra government will provide the financial grant of 1,000 rupees per quintal to those farmers whose tur and gram could not be purchased by the administration before the May 31 deadline. The state government had set up tur procurement target of 44.6 lakh quintals. The government had started purchasing tur from farmers by offering them guaranteed rates following bumper tur production. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis stated the government will also give a financial aid of 160 crore rupees to farmers whose crops got damaged due to unseasonal rain or hailstorm. The chief minister also announced a special subsidy for milk producers.

 The Madhya Pradesh government has announced an outstanding power bill waiver scheme for laborers and poor families. The state cabinet headed by Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan approved the Bijli Bill Mafi Yojana 2018 (Power Bill Waiver Scheme) which is expected to benefit about 77 lakh people of the state. Laborers falling under the unorganized sector in Madhya Pradesh will get power supply at a subsidized rate. The state cabinet also approved Mukhyamantri Jan Kalyan (Sambal) Yojana 2018 (a scheme to provide subsidized power) in the meeting.
