 Indian Oil Corporation has emerged as India's most profitable state-owned company for the second consecutive year. Indian Oil posted a record profit of Rs21,346 crore in 2017-18, followed by ONGC, whose profit stood at Rs19,945 crore. Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Industries is the most profitable company for the third straight year, posting highest ever profit of Rs36,075 crore.

 Infosys has completed the acquisition of WongDoody Holding Company, a US-based digital creative and consumer insights agency, for a total consideration of upto $75 million. Founded in 1993, WongDoody has clients across industries like telecommunications, consumer electronics, healthcare and consumer packaged goods.

 India's biggest lender State Bank of India (SBI) has revised its interest higher on retail fixed deposits or FDs below Rs. 1 crore. SBI has revision interest rates by up to 25 basis points in select maturities. The interest rate on SBI FDs with a maturity of one year to less than two years has been increased to 6.65% for the public, from 6.4% earlier.
Senior citizens will get an interest rate of 7.15% as compared to 6.9% earlier. SBI fixed deposits with a maturity of two years to less than three years will fetch an interest rate of 6.65%, higher than 6.6% earlier. Senior citizens will get 7.15% as compared to 7.10%. The interest rates across other maturities have been kept unchanged.

 The joint military exercise SURYA KIRAN-13 between India and Nepal began at Pithoragarh in Uttarakhand. The military exercise is a biannual event which is conducted alternatively in Nepal and India every six months. Over 300 soldiers from both the countries are taking part in the exercise. The aim of this exercise is to conduct battalion level joint training with emphasis on counterterrorism operations in mountainous terrain.

 Every year, on 31 May, World Health Organization and partners mark World No Tobacco Day (WNTD).  The theme of World No Tobacco Day 2018 is "Tobacco and heart disease."  The day highlights the health and other risks associated with tobacco use, and advocating for effective policies to reduce tobacco consumption.

 Yoga guru Baba Ramdev's Patanjali launched a new swadeshi messaging application called 'Kimbho' to compete with WhatsApp.  Kimbho caters to private and group chats with free phone and video calling. The tagline of Kimbho is "Ab Bharat Bolega". Patanjali has recently tied up with Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) to enter the telecom sector by launching Swadeshi Samriddhi SIM cards.

 Former Himachal Pradesh governor and Congress leader Urmila Singh died due to prolonged illness at a private hospital in Indore. She was 71. Belonging to a family of freedom fighters, Singh was appointed as the governor of Himachal Pradesh in 2010.Prior to that, she had served as the chairman of the National Scheduled Tribes Commission (NCTC).

 Social networking giant Facebook has partnered with National Commission for Women (NCW) to launch Digital Literacy Programme to train women on safe use of internet and social media. The programme was launched by Facebook in collaboration with Ranchi, Jharkhanda-based Cyber Peace Foundation (CPF), a civil society organisation involved in training related to all aspects of cyber security.
  • Digital Literacy Programme
Under it, awareness training will be conducted for 60,000 women in universities across major cities over a one-year period. These interactive training sessions will provide training on safe and responsible use of internet, social media and email. It will enable trainees to differentiate between credible and questionable information. The training will be conducted in local languages. The digital literacy programme will benefit women in universities across major cities in Haryana, Manipur, Delhi-NCR, Sikkim, Meghalaya, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu.
  • National Commission for Women (NCW)
NCW is a statutory body established under the National Commission for Women Act, 1990. It was established in January 1992 to review the constitutional and legal safeguards for women. It recommends remedial legislative measures, advise Government on all policy matters affecting women and facilitate redressal of grievances related to women.

Ministry of Railways conducted one day workshop Mission Raftaar aimed at raising average speed of freight trains and coaching trains in New Delhi. The workshop was inaugurated by Minister of State (MoS) for Railways Rajen Gohain and Chairman of Railway Board Ashwani Lohani. It was attended by all members of Railway Board along with General Managers of Zonal Railways & Senior Railway officers were present on occasion.
  • Mission Raftar
The mission aims at doubling average speed of freight trains and increasing average speed of coaching trains by 25kmph over a five year period. It was launched as part of strategy of Indian Railways to keep pace with growing competition from competing modes viz. road and airlines etc. Under it, specific actions and policy decisions have been initiated on railways for addressing different factors inhibiting average speeds. Under it, major constraints to rail mobility such as non-uniform sectional speeds have been identified and multi-pronged strategy has been developed to overcome the existing impediments due to fixed infrastructure, movable infrastructure, operational practices and institutional mechanisms.
  • Significance
The mission will help to reduce travel time for passengers, transit time for cargo, reduce operational cost, improve revenues and railway’s market share and also reduce pollution as railways in considered environment friendly and economical mode of transport. Principal routes of railways on Golden Quadrilateral (Delhi-Mumbai-Chennai-Kolkatta) along with diagonals which carry approximately 58% of freight traffic and 52% of coaching traffic has been taken up for initial emphasis of the mission.

 Andhra Pradesh Government notified its new state symbols after four year after bifurcation of undivided Andhra Pradesh in 2014 into two states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. These states symbols were notified by State department of environment, forest, science and technology.
  • New state symbols
    • State bird: Rose-ringed parakeet (Psittacula krameri). Locally known as Rama Chiluka.
    • State tree: Neem ( Azadirachta indica). Locally known Vepa Chettu.
    • State animal: Black-buck (Antilope cervicapra). Locally known as Krishna Jinka.
    • State flower:  Jasmine (Jasminum officinale). Its adoption will promote jasmine, which is grown commercially in Guntur, Prakasam, Kurnool, Kadapa, Anantapur and Chittoor districts of state.
  • State symbols of Telangana
    • State bird: Indian Roller (coracias benghalensis) or Palapitta. It also state bird of Odisha and Karnataka.
    • State tree: Jammi Chettu (prosopis cineraria).
    • State animal: Jinka or spotted deer.
    • State flower: Tangidi Puvvu (senna auriculata). It is widely used in the state’s famous Bathukamma festival.
