Direction

There are four main directions - East, West, North and South as shown below;

There are four cardinal directions - North-East (N-E), North-West, (N-W), South-East (S-E) and South-West (S-W) as shown below:

  1. At the time of sunrise, if a man stands facing the east, his shadow will be toward west.
  2. At the time of sunset the shadow of an object is always in the east.
  3. If a man stands facing the North, at the time of sunrise his shadow will be towards his left and at the time of sunset it will be towards his right.
  4. At 12: 00 noon, the rays of the sun are vertically downward hence there will be no shadow.

In this part of reasoning, questions can be asked about the direction of a person or the distance travelled by a person in a particular direction. On this basis, generally, following types of questions can be asked.

 

Type - I

  • Example 1
  1. After walking 6 km in a direction, I tuned to the right and then walked 2 km. After then I turned to the left and walked 10 km. In the end, I was moving towards the North. I started my journey moving in which direction?

(a) North                        (b) South

(c) East                          (d) West

(e) None of these

Answer: (a)

Explanation: The following path can be drawn on the basis of given information.

It is clear from the figure that I started my journey moving in the North direction.

  1. Rohan walks a distance of 3 km towards north, then turns to his left and walks 2 km. He again turns left and walks for 3 km. At this pint he turns to his left again and walks for 3 km. How far is he from the starting point?

Explanation: From figure, it is clear that OD is required distance which is 1 km.

  1. One morning Sujata started to walk towards the Sun. After covering some distance she turned to right. She move for a while and again turns to the right. Now in which direction is she facing?

Explanation: Hence, finally Sujata will face towards West,

 

Type - II

PASSAGE

Each of the following questions is based on the given information:

  1. Six flats on a floor in two rows facing North and South are allotted to P, Q, R, S, T and U.
  2. Q gets a North facing flat and is not next to S.
  3. S and U get diagonally opposite flats.
  4. R next to U, gets a South facing flat and T gets North facing flat.

  1. If the flats of P and T are interchanged then whose flat will be next to that of U?

Explanation: The possible arrangement of flats on the basis of given information has been shown below.                   

           

Interchanging flats of P and T,

Hence flat of R will be next to U.

Ankush is facing North and is right to Rajesh. Therefore, Rajesh is facing East.

 

  1. In which direction Sunil has to move to approach Raman?

Answer: (a)

Explanation: Ankush is left to Raman, who is facing west and Sunil is right to Ankush and Ankush is facing north. Therefore, Sunil has to move north-west to approach to the Raman.
