 Kenyan distance runner Eliud Kipchoge and Colombian long and triple jumper Caterine Ibarguen have been named male and female world athletes of the year.The pair were honoured by the IAAF ( The International Association of Athletics Federations ) at a ceremony in Monaco. Kipchoge, 34, won the London Marathon and set a world record of 2:01:39 in Berlin. Ibarguen, also 34, claimed triple and long jump honours in the Central American and Caribbean Games, the Continental Cup and the Diamond League finals. Sweden’s 19-year-old pole vaulter Armand Duplantis won the men’s rising star award while the women’s award went to American 400m runner Sydney McLaughlin.

 Gautam Gambhir has announced his retirement from all forms of Cricket. The 37-year-old announced his retirement on social media. A 12-year international career fetched over 10,000 runs for the country; 4,154 in 58 Tests, 5,238 in 147 ODIs and 932 in 37 T20Is. Gambhir, who last donned India colors in a Test against England in November 2016, was part of Indian title-winning teams at both the 2007 World T20 and the 2011 World Cup top-scoring for India in the finals of both events. Gambhir’s final outing on the cricket field came at his home ground, New Delhi’s Feroz Shah Kotla, in a Ranji Trophy tie for Delhi against Andhra Pradesh.

 Indian star wrestlers Vinesh Phogat and Sakshi Malik successfully emerged champions in the 57 kg and 62 kg title respectively in the Tata Motors Senior Women’s National Championship. Vinesh Phogat bagged her sixth National title. She had earlier won five Nationals in a row from 2012 to 2016. Sakshi put up a confident show to win the title in the 62 kg without losing a single point. The event was hosted by Uttar Pradesh.

 Ullas Narayan became the first ever Indian individual medal winner in an international ultra running event by clinching a bronze in the 2018 International Association of Ultra Running (IAU) 24 Hour Asia & Oceania Championships in Taipei. Narayan bagged the third position, completing 250 km, behind two Japanese runners Yoshihiko Ishikawa (253 km) and Nobuyuki Takahashi (252 km). Japan won the team event gold with a distance of 756 km and Australia (684 km) got the silver.

It was again all Ethiopian Show in Pune International Marathon 2018. Atlawim Debebe of Ethiopia won the Full Marathon with the timing of 2 hours 17 minutes 17 seconds. Teshome Getachew claimed second and Bekele Asefa third position. Both of them are also from Ethiopia. In women’s Full Marathon Pascalia Chepkogei from Kenya stood first with the timing of 2 hour 50 minutes 27 seconds. Belew Mekonnen and Fekede Tilahun of Ethiopia claimed second and third position. Dekebe Tafa and Degefa Gezmu both from Ethiopia are winners of the men’s and women’s half marathon.

 India’s 13-year-old shooter Esha Singh won the Women’s, Youth Women’s and Junior Women’s 10m Air Pistol competitions at the National Shooting Championship at Thiruvananthapuram. She beat Manu Bhaker and Heena Sidhu to win three gold medals in women’s air pistol events at the 62nd National Shooting Championships. The Telangana shooter prodigy shot 241.0 in the women’s final to leave behind Bhaker, who finished second with 238.9. Heena Sidhu finished 6th with a score of 154.9.

 The 19th edition of the prestigious Laureus World Sports Awards will be held in Monaco on February 2019. Considered the ‘Oscars of sports’, the Laureus World Sports Awards celebrate global sporting achievements across the calendar year. Former India cricket captains Kapil Dev, Rahul Dravid, and Sachin Tendulkar are members of the Laureus Academy. In 2018, Tennis great Roger Federer won the Laureus Sportsman of the Year award for a record fifth time, while Serena Williamswon the Sportswoman of the Year recognition for the fourth time.

 Sameer Verma has won the Syed Modi International Badminton Championships,men’s singles final against China’s Guangzu Lu, to retain the title. With this win, Verma sealed his spot in the BWF World Tour Finals. However, former champion Saina Nehwallost to Han Yue of China in women’s singles summit clash and won silver. Men’s doubles pair of Satwik Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty and women’s doubles players Ashwini Ponnappa and Sikki Reddy also won silver in their respective finals.

 Australia clinched Women’s World Twenty20 title as they attained an easy win over England in the final of the Women’s World T20 tournament. This is Australia’s 4th title win at Women’s World T20 in 6 editions of the tournament. The Southern Stars have won the trophy previously in 2010, 2012 and 2014. West Indieshosted the event.

 Former Chelsea striker Didier Drogba announced his retirement, calling time on a 20-year career in which the bullish center-forward won four Premier League titles and the 2012 Champions League. Ivorian Drogba, who had been playing in the United States for Phoenix Rising, had two spells at Chelsea, scoring 164 goals in 381 games having spearheaded the west London club’s revival under owner Roman Abramovich.
