 Former world number one Angelique Kerber defeated seven-time champion Serena Williams in the women's singles final to clinch her first-ever Wimbledon title. Angelique Kerber hails from Germany. Overall, it was the 30-year-old's third Grand Slam title after having won the Australian Open and US Open in 2016. Despite the defeat, 181st-ranked Serena will move 153 places to rank 28.

  Red Bull’s Max Verstappen won the Austrian Grand Prix 2018 title in Austria. Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen finished in the second spot.  Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel finished in the third spot. Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton retired from the race due to a mechanical issue in his car.

 Australian captain Aaron Finch slammed 172(76) against Zimbabwe to register the highest-ever individual score in T20Is, overtaking his own record of 156 runs. The 31-year-old opener smashed 10 sixes and 16 fours in his knock before getting out hit-wicket. Finch and D'Arcy Short shared a 223-run opening stand, which is the highest-ever partnership for any wicket in T20Is.

 In the summit clash of the 37th and final edition of the  Hockey Champions Trophy at Breda, the Netherlands, India lost to defending champions Australia via penalty shoot-off. The match went into the shoot-off after both the teams were locked at 1-1 in regulation time. It was Australia's record 15th Champions Trophy title. While India won their second consecutive silver medal, hosts the Netherlands bagged the bronze medal.

 Malaysian veteran Lee Chong Wei has won the Malaysian Open Badminton singles title for a historic 12th time. In the men’s final in Kuala Lumpur, he defeated young Japanese shuttler Kento Momota in straight games. In the women’s singles final, top seed Tai Tzu Ying from Taiwan saw off China’s He Bingjiao. India’s campaign in the tournament had ended with the defeat of PV Sindhu and Kidambi Srikanth in their singles semi-finals.

 The ISSF Junior World Cup 2 concluded in Suhl, Germany, where 761 junior shooters gathered and competed in 22 Rifle, Pistol and Shotgun events — both individual and team. They represented 61 countries, piling up the impressive total of 1544 starts: the highest number in the history of the Junior World Cup. Manu Bhaker shot 242.5 points and won the gold medal in 10m air pistol event.  She created a junior world record. India and the People’s Republic of China battled all along the competition for the top position in the medal board, which was eventually taken by the Indian National Team with 26 total medals: 15 golds, two silvers and nine bronzes. The People's Republic of China took 2nd place with 21 podiums: six golds, nine silvers and six bronzes.

 Forward Rani Rampal was named as the captain of India’s 18-member squad for the women’s hockey World Cup to be played in London in July 2018. Hockey India announced the 18-member Indian women’s team for the prestigious tournament. India have been placed in Pool B alongside hosts and world no. 2 England, world no. 7 USA and world no. 16 Ireland. Goalkeeper Savita has been named vice-captain. The tournament will also witness the return of goalkeeper Rajani Etimarpu after having rested for the Spain Tour.

 India sprinter Dutee Chand set a new national record in the women’s 100-metre race when she clocked 11.29 seconds at the 58th National Inter-State Senior Athletics Championships being held in Guwahati, Assam. The previous record of 11.30 seconds was also held by Dutee, which she achieved at the Indian Grand Prix in 2017. Dutee has qualified for the Asian Games in 100m and 200m by breaching the qualifying timings at the Inter-State Championships.

 Sixteen-year-old Indian shooter Saurabh Chaudhary set a new world record on the way to winning a gold medal in the ISSF Junior World Cup in Suhl, Germany. Saurabh shot a total of 243.7 in the 10m air pistol event in the ongoing International Shooting Sports Federation (ISSF) tournament. The junior world record prior to this was 242.5 by Chinese shooter Wang Zhehao at the first ISSF Junior World Cup of the year in Sydney. In the women’s 25m pistol final, Manu Bhaker was fifth with 19 hits and Devanshi Rana was eighth with five. With 8 gold medals, 1 silver and 5 bronze, India continued to top the medal standings.

 Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) reclaimed the world championship lead with a dominant victory in the French Grand Prix.  The Mercedes driver led from start to finish other than one lap around his pit stop to move 14 points ahead of Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel, who finished fifth. Max Verstappen of Red Bull finished 2nd in the race.
