Current Affairs Summits

  The third edition of the United Nations Peacekeeping Course for African Partners (UNPCAP) was inaugurated in New Delhi. The course is being conducted by the Centre for United Nations Peacekeeping in India (CUNPK) in partnership with the United States. The main aim of the course is to build and enhance the capacity of the African Troop Contributing Countries to the UN and to further train the trainers from these countries.

  Mr Hardeep Puri, Minister of State (I/C) for Housing & Urban Affairs inaugurated the 'First Apex Conference for the CEOs of Smart Cities' in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh. Since its launch in June 2015, the Smart Cities Mission (SCM), has been one of the most transformational urban missions. The two-day conference is being organised for providing a platform for cross-learning and knowledge sharing among the Smart City CEOs. The conference will enable the CEOs to learn from the experiences of all city leaders to understand in greater details both successes and failures.

 India would be hosting the 15th Asia Media Summit (AMS-2018) in New Delhi. The theme of this summit is “Telling our Stories Asia and More”.  The summit mainly aims to provide a unique opportunity to the broadcasters in Asia to share their thoughts on broadcasting and information. The annual summit will be organised by Asia-Pacific Institute for Broadcasting Development (AIBD) in collaboration with its partners and international organisations.

  The 12th informal meeting of SAARC Finance Ministers was held in Manila, Philippines, on the sidelines of the 51st Annual Meeting of Asian Development Bank (ADB). The meeting was attended by the Finance Ministers/Heads of Delegations from the SAARC member states. Finance Minister of Nepal Yuba Raj Khatiwada chaired the meeting. The Finance Ministers/Heads of Delegation briefed the meeting about the current status of economic progress achieved by their countries. They also appreciated ADB for its contribution in economic growth of SAARC countries.

 The 4th Regional Conference on ‘Futuristic, Resilient and Digital Infrastructure’ organized by the Ministry of Finance in collaboration with the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), and Research and Information System for Developing Countries (RIS) concluded in Bengaluru. The 2-day Conference was a lead-up event to the 3rd Annual Meeting of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) which is going to be hosted by the Government of India on 25th and 26th June 2018 in Mumbai.

 The ‘Vibrant North East 2018', an event in which people would be made aware of central government’s schemes and programmes, was held in Guwahati, Assam. Players from the agriculture, food processing, consumer affairs, civil supply, drinking water and sanitation sectors participated in the three-day event. The event is organised by Delhi-based NGO, Centre for Agriculture and Rural Development (CARD). The main purpose of the event is to disseminate information about the schemes, grants and projects of the Central Government to ensure that they are implemented as envisaged officially.

 Minister of Commerce and Industry and Civil Aviation, Suresh Prabhu, attended India- South Africa business summit in Johannesburg, South Africa. The visit began with a series of bilateral meetings. The Minister highlighted the historical relations between India and Swaziland, Botswana and Lesotho and pledged to take the economic partnership forward. The Minister also met members of India-South Africa CEOs forum who expressed confidence in the Government of India’s efforts to strengthen India-Africa relations. Mr Prabhu inaugurated a multi-sectoral exhibition at Johannesburg.

 The 9th India Japan Energy Dialogue was held in New Delhi. Minister of State(IC) for Power and New & Renewable Energy, R.K Singh, and Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) Hiroshige Sekosigned a Joint Statement at the conclusion of the meeting. Both the countries agreed to work together for energy security, energy access and climate change issues. They also agreed to initiate the discussion on Electric Vehicles (EVs) and commit to work together in promoting well-functioning energy markets.

 India-Nepal Inter-Governmental Committee (IGC) meeting on trade, transit and cooperation to Control Unauthorised Trade started in Kathmandu, Nepal. The Indian side is led by Commerce Secretary Rita Teaotia. The main focus of the two-day meeting will be on further strengthening trade and investment ties between both the countries. The IGC meeting provides a regular platform to review the implementation of past trade and transit agreements besides discussing new measures to facilitate bilateral trade and investment.

 Suresh Prabhu, the commerce and industry minister, held the first e-commerce think tank meeting in New Delhi. The minister chaired the meeting which aimed at framing a national policy on e-commerce. The setting up of this e-commerce think tank and the initiative taken by the ministry may well be interpreted as the government and its allied bodies beginning to understand the growth potential of the e-commerce industry in India.
