 World Mental Health Day is celebrated on 10 October every year. The theme for 2018 WMH day is ‘Young People and Mental Health in a Changing World’. World Mental Health Day was observed for the first time on 10 October 1992.  The goal of World Mental Health Day is to increase awareness about mental health and the importance of mental health in the overall health of a person. It was started as an annual activity of the World Federation for Mental Health.

 World Post Day is celebrated each year on 9 October, the anniversary of the establishment of the Universal Postal Union in 1874 in the Swiss Capital, Bern. The theme selected for the 2018 competition is: “Imagine you are a letter travelling through time. What message do you wish to convey to your readers?”  It was declared World Post Day by the Universal Postal Union (UPU) Congress held in Tokyo, Japan in 1969. Since then, countries across the world participate annually in the celebrations.

  The Indian Air Force is celebrating its 86th Anniversary on 08 Oct 2018. To mark the occasion and in keeping up with the tradition, IAF has planned a grand Parade cum Investiture Ceremony at Air Force Station Hindan (Ghaziabad). The air display will commence with flag bearing skydivers of famous Akash Ganga Team, who will jump from an An-32 aircraft. Air Chief Marshal BS Dhanoa, Chief of the Air Staff will review the parade. The parade will be followed by a breathtaking display by the Air Warrior Drill Team, wherein the team will showcase their weapon handling skills and carry out diverse manoeuvers with their rifles.

 World Teachers’ Day is celebrated globally on 5th October. The WTD 2018 will mark the70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1948) that recognizes education as a key fundamental right and establishes an entitlement to free compulsory education, ensuring inclusive and equitable access for all children. The theme for this year’s WTD is “The right to education means the right to a qualified teacher,” has been chosen to remind the global community that the right to education cannot be achieved without the right to trained and qualified teachers
Background:  Held annually on 5 October since 1994, World Teachers’ Day commemorates the anniversary of the signing of the 1966 ILO/UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers. It is co-convened in partnership with UNICEF, UNDP, the International Labour Organization, and Education International.

 World Animal Day is celebrated at various parts of the world on 4th October to raise the status of animals in order to improve welfare standards around the globe. World Animal Day was originated by Heinrich Zimmermann. He organized the first World Animal Day on 24 March 1925 at the Sports Palace in Berlin, Germany.

 The International Day of Older Persons is observed on October 1 each year to recognize the contributions of older persons and to examine issues that affect their lives. The theme for the 2018 celebration is “Celebrating Older Human Rights champions”. On December 14, 1990, the United Nations General Assembly voted to establish October 1 as the International Day of Older Persons.  The day was observed for the first time onOctober 1, 1991. The day is celebrated by raising awareness about issues affecting the elderly, such as senescence and elder abuse.

 The United Nations has designated the first Monday of October of every year as World Habitat Day. The theme for World Habitat Day 1 October 2018 is Municipal Solid Waste Management. World Habitat Day was established in 1985 by the United Nations General Assemblythrough Resolution 40/202 and was first celebrated in 1986. The purpose of World Habitat Day is to reflect on the state of our towns and cities, and on the basic right of all to adequate shelter.

 30 September celebrates the feast of St. Jerome, the Bible translator who is considered the patron saint of translators. The theme for International Translation Day 2018 is “Translation: promoting cultural heritage in changing times”.  St. Jerome was a priest from North-eastern Italy, who is known mostly for his endeavour of translating most of the Bible into Latin from the Greek manuscripts of the New Testament. He also translated parts of the Hebrew Gospel into Greek.

 World Heart Day takes place on 29th September every year and is the World Heart Federation‘s and the world’s biggest platform for raising awareness about cardiovascular disease, including heart disease and stroke. It was launched in 2000 by the World Heart Federation as an annual event.

 World Rabies Day is celebrated on 28 September. It is celebrated annually to raise awareness about rabies prevention and to highlight progress in defeating this horrifying disease. 28 September also marks the anniversary of Louis Pasteur’s death, the French chemist and microbiologist, who developed the first rabies vaccine.
