Introduction. Shri Rajiv Gandhi was born on August 20, 1944 in Bombay. He is the elder son if the late Prime Minister India Gandhi Who was assassinated on October 31, 1984. He is the 7th Prime Minister of India.

His entry in politics. Mr. Rajiv Gandhi was a commercialPilot. His younger brother Mr. Sanjay Gandhi met with a fatalAccident in an air crash in 1980. Mr. Sanjay Gandhi was much inPolitics. But his tragic death brought about a charge in his mother.After the sudden disappearance of Mr. Sanjay Gandhi his motherMrs. Indira Gandhi, needed somebody whom she could turn up forhelp and advice and whom she could trust. Though not willing tocome into politics at first, Mr. Rajiv Gandhi could not say no to hisMother. Thus he entered I he unknown field of politics.

His political career. After joining the Congress Party he got 12months basic political training. He was given a ticket to contest LokSabha bye-election from Amati, the seat of his brother. He won thecontest. In February 1983 he was appointed General Secretary ofCongress (I). Here he got a chance to turn almost all his attention tothe party work. His apprenticeship was short. The hour came to give him chance to rise to the most important rank of Prime Minister after the death of Indira Gandhi.

His views on politics before 1980. He was quite contented with His career of a pilot. He always preferred to fly planes than to play the Game of politics. He had a deep rooted haired for politics. He would call politics as the game of politics scoundrel. He had a poor opinion about Politicians who were full of wheeling dealing and intrigue. Even his Italian wife Mrs. Sonia Gandhi was dead against the idea of his Getting into politics.

In the capacity of the Prime Minister. He was sworn as the Prime Minister of India on the evening of October 31, 1984 within few hours of the assassination of his Italians Wife. Mrs. Indira Gandhi. The Working Committee of the Indian National Congress unanimously elected him as Congress President without any dissent. Like his mother he was holding the twin posts of Prime Minister and Party Chief.

His vow. He has taken a vow to bury corruption, indolence. Inefficiency, exploitation, social Injustice, economic disparities, Stagnation, sterility, lawlessness, destructive and disturbing forces mercilessly.

Conclusion. The results of the elections held 1984 had clearly shown the confidence that the people had in the dynamic leadership of Rajiv Gandhi. Unfortunately he died an unnatural death on May 21, 1989. may his soul rest in peace.
