*   Introduction   Noun is a naming word. It can be the name of a person, place, animal, things etc. 4,       example.jpg  
  •  John is talking to Mr. Bush.
  •  The tiger is a wild animal.
  •  Girls are playing in the field.
  •  The radio is very costly.
  •  Put the key on the table.  
    *     Analysis in the above given sentences, John and Mr. Bush are the names of persons, tiger is the name of an animal, field is the name of a place and radio, table , key are the names of different things. So, these words are nouns.     *     NOTE: All naming words are noun. For example: Names of birds, insects, flowers, fruits, material, etc. Words denoting feeling of heart and quality or state of human beings are also noun.   For example: Childhood, Honesty, Poverty, Happiness, etc.

*     Predicate   Predicate is that part of a sentence which tells us something about the subject of the sentence.     example.jpg  
  •  The boat sails in the river.
  •  The birds are flying in the sky.
  •  Reema is singing a song.  
  *     Analysis in the above given sentences 'sails in the river', 'flying in the sky', 'singing a song' are telling us something about the subject, 'the boat', 'the birds', and 'Reema'.   •  The glass in made of steel.
  •  The tall boy is jumping on the road  
  *     Analysis In the above given sentences, 'Robert',  'the horse', 'the aeroplane',  'the cow,' 'james', 'the glass' and 'the tall boy' are spoken about. In other words, something have been said about them. Therefore, they are subject.

  • A group of words which makes complete sense is called Sentence.
  • A sentence always begins with a capital letter.
  • Assertive sentence ends with full stop.
  • Interrogative sentence ends with a Q. Mark (?).
  • The subject 'you' is generally hidden in Optative sentence..
  • Exclamation mark (!) is put at the end of exclamatory sentence.
  • Optative sentence ends with exclamatory mark !.
  • A question begins with either Helping Verb (is, am, are, was, were, has, have, had, do, does, did, can, will, shall, may, etc.) or Question word (What, where, how, when, whom, which, why, etc.)
  • A question ends with a question mark (?) or mark of interrogative.  

*     Types of Sentence  
  •  Steve is very happy today.
  •  Smith eats mangoes.
  •  Who has broken the table?
  •  What do you want to know?
  •  Shut the door.
  •  Please call the doctor at once.
  •  Don't drink this water.
  •  Hurrah! The bird is alive.
  •  What a great fall!
  •  May you get a job soon?
    *     The above given sentences give different expression
  •  Sentences 1 and 2 express statements in general way.
  •  Sentences 3 and 4 express questions.
  •  Sentences 5, 6 and 7 express an order, a request or a prohibition.
  •  Sentences 8 and 9 express happiness and surprise.
  •  Sentences 10 express a wish or a desire.  
  *     On the basis of this a sentences can be divided into five kinds:
  •  Statement                               (Or Assertive Sentence)
  •  Question                                  (Or Interrogative Sentence)
  •  Command                               (Or Imperative Sentence)
  •  Exclamation                            (Or Exclamatory Sentence)
  •  Optative                                   (Or Optative Sentence)  
  •   *      Statement (Assertive Sentence): The sentences that express something in a general way are called statements or Assertive sentences.     example.jpg  
    •  An elephant is a large animal.
    •  My grandfather lives in the village.
    •  The servant has not come yet.
    •  Mohan does not like coffee.  
      NOTE: Assertive sentence ends with full stop.     *     There are two types of statements
    •  Affirmative Statement
    •  Negative Statement  
      Affirmative Statement: The sentence which affirms something is called Affirmative Statement.   example.jpg  
    •  Mohan was driving a car.
    •  The enemy surrendered.  
    These sentences affirm something. So these are Affirmative Statements. Negative Statement: The sentence which denies something is called Negative Statement.     example.jpg  
    •  Aryan was not driving car.
    •  The enemy did not surrender.
    These sentences deny something. So these are Negative Statements. In a Negative Statement 'no' is used.     *      Question (Interrogative sentence): The sentence which asks or enquires something is called a Question or an Interrogative Sentence.       example.jpg  
    •  Is he attending the class regularly?
    •  Do you want to work with them?
    •  What do you know about her?
    •  Why are you going there?  
    The above given sentences ask something. These are Questions.   *     NOTE:
    • A question begins with either Helping Verb (is, am, are, was, were, has, have, had, do, does, did, can, will, shall, may, etc.) or Question word (What, where, how, when, whom, which, why, etc.)
    • Interrogative sentences have always Q. Mark (?) at the end.  
      *      Command (Imperative sentence): The sentence which expresses an order, a request, more...

    *    Introduction   A group of words that makes complete sense is called sentence. While speaking, we use words in a group. When this group of words expresses a complete sense, we call it sentence. If it makes no sense, we do not call it sentence.     example.jpg

    • Beautiful is flower this very.
    • The boy reads a book.
    • Is Marry name her.
    • The birds are flying in the sky.
      *   Analysis You can easily make a difference between the above given group of words. See the group of words given in 1, 3, and 5 these group of words do not give us complete sense. So we cannot call them sentences. Whereas the group of words given in 2, 4 and 6 have complete senses. Therefore, 2, 4 and 6 are the examples of sentences.   *   NOTE:
    • First letter of each sentence is always written in capital letter.
    • A sentence has a full stop or a question mark or exclamation sign at the end.

    *     Passage - 5   Read the passage carefully and answer the following questions: There was a tree, near a pond. A dove lived on the tree with her children. One day an ant fell into the pond water. She tried to come out of the water but could not. The dove saw the ant drowning and felt pity for it. She plucked a leaf and put it into the pond water near the ant. The ant climbed on the leaf and came to the bank. Thus its life was saved by the dove.     *   Passage - 4   Read the passage carefully and answer the following questions: Once a greedy dog was wandering in the town in search of food. Suddenly, it saw a butcher's shop. It came to the shop and stole a piece of meat from the shop and ran out of town. It wanted to eat the meat at a lonely place. There was a small river in the way. The river had a wooden bridge on it. The dog stepped on to the bridge to cross the river. When the dog reached the middle of the bridge it looked downwards in the clear still water of the river. It mistook its reflection for another dog with a piece of meat in the mouth. As it was greedy, it could not bear it. Without losing any time the dog barked at its own reflection.
