Freedom is often spoken of in what can be referred to as a 'loose sense.' One country has more freedom than another; a twenty-one year old has more freedom than a fifteen year old, but what exactly does this word, which is so often flippantly used, mean? Or, if this conclusion cannot be reached, what does it not mean? For different people it may mean different things, but there has to be an equilibrium that can be reached in order to determine the meaning of freedom itself. In one form, freedom can mean that a person has 'exemption from an obligation.' In another way, it can be interpreted that one is 'not under the control or power of another.' Perhaps it can be defined as having the liberty to choose who/what the ruler is to be. For, since nothing can exist without having some form of rule, if people were more...

Eliminating pollution from the environment has not proved as easy as eliminating it from the pages of a book. Industry is now spending several billion dollars a year on pollution control. The first problem in understanding air pollution is to decide what is and what is not an air pollutant. Many of the things generally considered pollutants are present in the natural air. The amount of a substance locally present in the air is clearly important in defining a pollutant. Also the amount of harm or inconvenience caused by the substance and how long it remains in the atmosphere. These three factors are known as the three T's (tonnage, toxicity and time in the atmosphere). A great deal of power is needed to run the factories of modern industrial nations. Automobiles, trains, planes and buses need power too. Nearly all of this power is produced in the same way—by burning more...

Millions of people own a mobile phone these days, and ever since they have been around scientists have questioned whether they are safe or not. Do they cause tumours, earaches, mercury poisoning? The problem is that mobile phones are still too new to know the long-term effects on human. Mobile phones give off a radiation of radio frequency round 10 MHz to 300 Ghz. But so do other appliances. Why does mobiles especially get pictured as being hazardous? Drivers who use these mobiles whilst driving are the only 'health risk' that can be proven, the drivers get distracted and lose control over the vehicle. Mobiles are said to cause brain tumours, they say this because there mobile phone users were found to have tumours of the same kind. Mobiles cause memory loss, radiation sickness. Mobiles can disturb your sleep pattern, according to the researchers from worldwide universities. Mobile phones increase more...

Henry Ford was born on July 30,1863 to William and Mary Ford. He was the first of six children. He grew up in a rich farming household in Dearborn, Michigan. He enjoyed a typical childhood, spending his days in a one-room schoolhouse and doing farm chores. Ever since he was young he showed an interest in the mechanical aspect of things and how they worked and functioned. He used to take things apart and put them back together to get an idea of the inner workings of basic mechanical tools. In 1879, at a young age of 16, he left his home to travel to the nearby city of Detroit to work as an apprentice for a machinist. He occasionally returned home to work on the farm. He remained an apprentice for three years and then returned to Dearborn. During the next few years, Henry divided his time between operating more...

Of all the scientists to emerge from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries there is one whose name is known by almost all living people. While most of these do not understand this man's work, everyone knows that its impact on the world of science is astonishing. Yes, many have heard of Albert Einstein's General Theory of relativity, but few know about the intriguing life that led this scientist to discover what some have called, "The greatest single achievement of human thought." Einstein was born in Ulm, Germany on March 14, 1874. Before his first birthday, his family had moved to Munich where young Albert's father, Hermann Einstein, and uncle set up a small electro chemical business. He was fortunate to have an excellent family with which he held a strong relationship. Albert's mother, Pauline Einstein, had an intense passion for music and literature, and it was she that first introduced more...

On August 6, 1945, a B-29 bomber named Enola Gay dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan. Hiroshima had been almost eradicated with an estimated 70-80,000 people killed. Three days later, a second, more powerful bomb was dropped on the Japanese city of Nagasaki, killing over 100,000 people. Since Japan was economically and militarily devastated by the late summer of 1945, the use of the atomic bombs on an already overcome Japan was unnecessary and unwarranted in bringing about a conclusion to the war in the Pacific. By the end of the war, the U.S. forces had pushed the Japanese far back into their country, leaving them no access to any resources from the Indies. Japanese cities and factories were being endlessly bombarded by American bombers. Louis Morton, an author on the situation felt that since . . . The Pacific Fleet had driven the Imperial Navy from the ocean more...

The complex issue of child labour is a developmental issue worth investigating. The notion that children are being exploited and forced into labour, while not receiving education crucial to development, concerns many people. India is the largest example of a nation plagued by the problem of child labour. Estimates cite figures of between 60 and 115 million working children in India — the highest number in the world (Human Rights Watch 1996, 1).    that are the causes of child labour in India? How do governmental policies affect it? What role does education play in regard to child labour in India? A critical analysis of the answers to these questions may lead in the direction of a possible solution. These questions will be answered through an analysis of the problem of child labour as it is now, investigating how prevalent it is and what types of child labour exist. The more...

According to the Oxford English Dictionary one of the definitions of the word 'education' is: 'The systematic instruction, schooling or training given to the young in preparation for the work of life.' Although this is an accurate description of what an actual education may be, there is a great deal more to the process of becoming educated than the actual instruction and schooling one may receive. If you ask a person in high school or college exactly why he is in school his response would probably have something to do with 'getting an education.' Is that really why he is there? The next question you may ask is "what are you going to do with your education?" The response would undoubtedly include something about 'getting a good job' or perhaps 'to make a lot of money.' There is no guarantee that getting a high school 'education' is going to get more...
