World Environment Day (WED) was established by the UN General Assembly in 1972 to mark the opening of the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment. Although I have many friends in India I have always wished for a friend who lives in a foreign country. The other day I was reading the magazine "Target" and came across the addresses of various children all over the world who want to make pen friends. I looked for a name and country that i liked. I wanted pen friend in the United States of America as found the culture of that country very different from ours. Finally I found the address of Jane Adams who livs in San Francisco. The earth Day observed each year on April 22 marks the anniversary of the birth of the modem environmental movement in 1970. Earth Day Founder Gaylord Nelson, then a US Senator from Wisconsin, proposed the first nationwide environmental protest "to shake up the political establishment and force this issue onto the national agenda". The environmental movement was proposed at a time when air pollution was commonly accepted as the smell of prosperity. Environment was a word that appeared more often in spelling bees than on the evening news. My class-room is situated in the eastern wing of the school. It is near the Principal's office. It is flanked by broad verandahs on both sides. Like all the class-rooms in our school, my class-room is very spacious. It is airy and well ventilated. There are two windows. On both sides, there are grassy lawns beyond the verandahs.
